In response to Caravan Toilet

I was managing a building site many years ago and a lorry arrived to empty the portable chemical toilets in the site compound.

It was lunchtime and the canteen was full, but the guy driving the lorry said we just lift the floor plate and the large hose sucks out the tank

Ok, I said and he reversed into the compound and put the suction hose in the tank

But, what he did not tell me was, to create the suction, the machine blows all the fumes inside the main tank out into the air, to make it suck.

so the compound was filled with the fumes that had built up inside this large petrol tanker sized waste truck.

It was a hot day, so all the canteen windows were wide open and unfortunately the blow pipe on the truck was horizontal and pointing

towards the open windows.

the sounds of people being sick and the rush to leave the canteen was a stampede into the compound, where of course the stink was even stronger, made things worse.

The formalehyde fumes in the tank and the sewage formed a very toxic combination.

I was not popular for a day or 2 after that, but I told them " The driver said it would not smell "

 The blue fluid in the chemical toilets, was perfumed and OK, but what blew out of that main tank was not.
