bookiebasher mentions Phil Bull, who was the founder of Timeform. Fascinating man, who I got to know quite well. Anyone know any Phil Bull stories? A quite extraodinary man, who lived in Halifax. Owned a lot of Racehorses over the years, always with ancient Greek names.
When Phil spioke, it was time to listen. Great, great man.

Mention of a "payoff" if Pompey got relgated reminded me of my Chairman when I was working, Mr John Kirkland OBE. For 40 or more years, John's Father, Jack, & then John himself, were Directors at Derby County. I believe Jack was instrumental in Cloughie departing, Jack believed that NO individual, even Brian Clough, was bigger than the club.
Anyway, when John was Chairman, or Vice-Chairman, he believed in running the Football Club along commercial lines. So he was against paying players wages if they got suspended. Quite right too.
But he used to get apoletic with rage at the mere suggestion that when employees (of Derby County, or his Construction Group, Bowmer & Kirkland) got dismissed for failing to deliver, they should get paid off. He would take their car keys off them immediately & give them NOTHING. He simply could not grasp why someone should fail, & get paid for failing. "It will disincentivise those that do their job properl;y" he told me a million times.
When I decided to retire, he ofered me a number of different positions within his Group, in a bid to keep me, but I'd burned out, & was not prepared to work for him unless I could give him maximum value, as I always had. I said, "Thanks John, but I'm all washed up, I can't go on, I just can't hack it any more, the Company has got too big for me, & I have some things to do in life before it's too late". ("My" company, owned by him but run by me was turning over £50 million plus by then). I had no contract - I don't believe in them, nor did he, so that was that, I asumed.
Imagine my shock when he says"OK Tony, I don't want to keep you if you are not happy. I will pay you 2 years salary, & you can keep your Company Car (a Merc). Organise your succession, & you can go". What a top, top man, who I truly idolse. We still keep in touch, & he's knocked out about Poker 425 & stuff, watches it regularly.
Don't know why I just told you all that, but there you go.

must have been nice getting that pay off. My old company didnt really want me to hang around despite being a great asset to them. Still, I was just glad to be out.

Oops, that may get a repeat airing........occasionally!!
For anyone to spot values in any employee is a true sign of competency, my production manager took a temp off the shop floor and gave him an office job stating "he's far too intelligent to waste here".
I actually challenged him to an IQ test, shopfloor v staff (even though i am staff i regard myself as "one of the lads" though that's very tough!!).
He declined and i mention it as regularly as i can get away with

currently i am fully laid up on harry and and stand to lose £40 but if the field wins i get £62 and i have a select few that would give me £100+ some nearly 4 figures
i lost alot when warnock walked away yesterday and i was busy backing him at 4-1 so spent today resolving this
redknapp willl drift to 1.5 in a few hours where i tend to use most of the £62 i have on field to recover some of my loses on harry and wait for him to drift back to 1.3 again and replay the ths, as nothing will be done untill money and the market will continue to move i should clear my liabilty on harry just keep an eye on where the market chasers are putting there money and try and get in and out around that value

If Redknapp does go to 1.5, I could be in
Layed at 1.38 so should at least recover my loss.

the price is being kept artifically low while the backers get there bets laid off
thats why you see huge bets every know and then then as soon as the price moves down then come off
