Is there any tips for breaking in the boots or is it just acase for wearing them?

sleeping bag is a goodun but it aint half  a struggle to wrap it tightly to get it back into its bag...

contrary to popular belief multiple pairs of socks is not a good thing. More likely to cause you blisters than save them.
Just buy a good pair of walking socks, although i think they do base socks too. which kinda contradicts the not doubling up theory.
Just dont do it with 2 pairs of normal socks

Got him apair of commando socks to go with them so ill just get him wear them till he has worn them in

 still got a couple of days so hopefully he'll be ok.........

get him to go for a walk in them everyday till they feel right

put zinc oxide tape round sensitive areas of the feet as protection for first few walks

as for sleeping bag i hope you didnt do what alot of people when i was young and bought the kids red or blue bags

also make sure he has and uses a sleeping bag liner it will save money on dry cleaning the bag
