Nope, not based on what you said. Overcalling out of position with a really marginal hand is bad here. I'm sure he thinks that if he hits a big flop he can stack the donkey but when he doesnt, he will be in no mans land with a player who wont fold too often.
Check raising is pretty terrible, first of all, when the donkey overbets the pot like that he isnt folding and he probably has an overpair or at least top pair. A donkey isnt going to fold a worse hand than the pair of sixes but will fold all the complete air hands the 86 beats. He might even call with two overcards and the 86 still isnt in great shape.
When you say seat 5 is new, a donkey but doesn't mind throwing his chips in, do you mean he is aggressive and bluffs a lot or just will call down light? If seat 3 thinks the donkey is bluffing a lot then there are better spots than this to take advantage of it. Stick to playing big cards and pairs and let him stack off when a top pair or better hand is made. Either way, if this fella is as big as a muppet as you say then I am not going to try and take him off any pot, im gonna wait till I have the goods and hope he stacks off.
Are you seat 3? (Are you seat 5?)

Preflop call is questionable. Different if it is a multiway pot, but here it's a big raise and we're out of position with a marginal hand.
I guess you have to fold or shove on this flop, but you're only getting called if you're way behind. But had you folded pre you wouldn't be in this predicament.

Preflop is pretty bad against any opponent we just simply aren't deep enough to use our edge postflop, especially oop.
Postflop isn't that bad if player 5 is a true maniac likely to do this with overs but most opponents have us beat with this ridic overbet and are never folding.

would specifically putting player 5 on two high cards make this play any better?

One Question, when you shove, do you want the call? or are you happy to take a call?

Still dislike the call pre, but it makes the shove much more reasonable, depending how reliable you think your read is. "Putting someone" on overcards doesn't sound like that big of a read...

What information do we have to suggest he has two high cards? Other than that is what tends to be in an opponents holding and there are 4 cards higher than a ten.
A decent reg who made a bet in relation to the pot I could make an argument for having high cards a bit more, making the old standard c bet, but when we are dealing with a loon you cant really assume he knows what c betting is.

See how the guy raised 5xBB pre flop. Was this just the standard raise for the table or was this higher than normal?
Most opening raises tend be 3xBB but here this guy raises 5xBB. Was this out of the ordinary for him? The reason I ask is that quite often a bigger than normal pre-flop bet from a bad player is AK.

the call pre-flop is worse than the check-raise imo, but both are corners on the road to brokesville...
