The Winner

• The 2009 World Series of Poker $2,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em champion is Keven Stammen, from Celina, Ohio.

• Stammen is a 23-year-old professional poker player.

• Stammen was born in Coldwater, OH.

• Stammen has been playing poker since he was a child.  He started out playing in friendly games with friends and became a regular in many private games around the Dayton area by his teen years.  He now plays poker full-time, both in private games and online.

• “My life is pretty crazy,” Stammen said.  “I play a lot of cash games and have done that ever since I can remember.”

• When Stammen turned 19, he began playing in casinos in Windsor, ON (Canada), since the legal age is lower in some Ontario Casinos than elsewhere.

• “I’ve always been a poker player,” Stammen said.

• “Ever since I was like 15 or 16, I played poker in the clubs in Ohio,” Stammen stated.  “I used to play in some of the small tournaments they had when I was younger.”

• During the post-tournament interview, it became obvious that Stammen quite simple lives and breathes poker.  He was queried about several key hands and was able to remember, in excruciating detail, every single hand, bet size, and action that developed.

• Stammen collected $506,786 for first place.  He was also awarded his first WSOP gold bracelet.

• Stammen has now cashed seven times at the WSOP, all since 2007.  He also had three WSOP Circuit cashes.

• “It’s good to have a bracelet,” Stammen said.  “Last year I came out here and cashed four times.  I got close a few times.  But I took a few beats.  This (win) sure makes up for it.”

The Final Table

• The final table was comprised of no former WSOP gold bracelet winners.  This was the sixth of 14 finales held so far this year with no former winners -- which guaranteed a first-time winner.

• Five of the final nine players were aged in their 20s.

• This was the first event played this year (other than the Casino Employees tournament) with an all-North American cast.  There were six Americans, two Canadians, and on Mexican among the final nine.

• The runner up was Angel Guillen, from Mexico City, Mexico.  Guillen came close to becoming only the second national of Mexico to win a WSOP gold bracelet.  In 2006, Victor Perches became the first Mexican ever to win.  Mexican-born Luis Velador also won a gold bracelet last year, but he resided in California at the time of his victory.

• The third-place finisher was Shawn Glines, from Las Vegas, NV.  He is a 29-year-old poker pro.

• The fourth-place finisher was Bahador “Baha” Ahmadi, from Burnaby, BC (Canada).  An interesting side note about this player:  Ahmadi, who was born in Iran, played college football at Holy Cross.

• The fifth-place finisher was Torrey Reily, from New Orleans, LA.

• The sixth-place finisher was Antoine Berube, from Quebec City, Quebec (Canada).

• The seventh-place finisher was Todd “Turkish” Altinbas, from Miami, FL.  Note:  In some player profiles, this player is listed as “Oktay Altinbas.”

• The eighth-place finisher was Matt Lynn, from San Diego, .

• The ninth-place finisher was Gregg Merkow, from Plano, TX.  He won the WSOP Circuit Main Event at the Tunica Grand (Mississippi) in 2005.

• The final table was played in a lightening-fast 4:05.  With a one-hour dinner break omitted, actual play lasted just over three hours, or 70 hands.  This was the shortest final table, by far, at this year’s WSOP.

Other In-the-Money Finishers

• Other former gold bracelet winners who cashed in this event included – Svetlana Gromenkova (39th), An Tran (49th), Phil Ivey (18th), Matt Keikoan (56th), and Ronald Kirk (43rd).

• There was considerable interest in Phil Ivey’s performance in this event.  Just three days ago, Ivey won WSOP gold bracelet number six.  He came into Day Three with a short stack and exited in 18th place.

• Nikolay Evdakov, from Moscow, Russia finished in 94th place.  This marked Evdakov’s third cash already this year.  In 2008, Evdakov set a new WSOP record with most cashes in a single year – with ten.  He is currently on pace to match that record and could break it, with a few extra events added to this year’s schedule.  An interesting side note is that Evdakov’s highest finish remains 12th.

• The defending champion in this event was Duncan Bell, a.k.a. “Pumper,” from Vancouver, BC (Canada).  He did not enter the event this year.

The Event

• The $2,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Championship attracted 1,088 entrants.  This created a prize pool totaling $2,502,400.  The top 117 finishers collected prize money.

• So far, the pace at most final tables at this year’s WSOP has been slow.  Due to very favorable structures, players are getting more play for their tournament investment.  That said, the first 90 minutes of this final table progressed at an unprecedented bust-out rate.  From the time play consolidated to ten players, it took just 33 hands to eliminate five players.

• When heads-up play began, Keven Stammen held a 5 to 2 chip lead over Angel Guillen.

• The final hand of the night came when all of Guillen’s chips went into the pot after a flop of 9-8-2 with two hearts.  Guillen had J-9, good for top pair with a jack kicker.  But Stammen had an overpair holding pocket jacks.  The higher pair held up, giving Stammen the victory.

• The tournament officially began on Friday, June 5th, at 12 noon.  The tournament officially ended on Sunday, June 7th, at 8:45 pm.

WSOP Statistics

• Through the conclusion of Event #14, the 2009 WSOP has attracted 17,099 entries.  $32,345,925 in total prize money has been awarded to winners.

• Through Event #14 -- 12 Americans have won gold bracelets.  One Russian player has won.  One Finnish player has won.  No other nations have been represented on the gold bracelet stand.  So far, this is a far cry from last year, when 16 of the 55 gold bracelet events were won by non-Americans (29 percent).  This number increased to 19 of 59 events (32 percent), including the four gold bracelet tournaments played at WSOP-Europe.

• All U.S. 50 states have had at least one entrant into this year’s WSOP.  All ten Canadian provinces have had at least one entrant into this year’s WSOP.

• International players (non-Americans) make up about 15 percent of the field, in events played so far.  Note that this number is expected to grow higher when the Main Event is played next month, which attracts an even greater number of international visitors.  It’s important to remember that last year, one international visitor named Peter Eastgate came to the WSOP and won the world title and $9,152,416.

• The Event #13 winner Keven Stammen is to be classified as a pro player.  He plays poker full-time.  Accordingly, the “Pro-Am” gold bracelet scoreboard (excluding Event #1 – Casino Employees) currently reads:

Professionals -- 8 wins (Thang Luu, Steven Sung, Jason Mercier, Phil Ivey, Rami Boukai, Anthony Harb, Ville Wahlbeck, Keven Stammen)

Amateurs -- 3 wins (Freddie Ellis, Ken Aldridge, Travis Johnson)

Semi-Pros -- 1 win (Vitaly Lunkin)

Errors and Omissions (Previous Reports):

• NEW:  The report for Event #12 had a few typos, which listed the winner’s name wrong.  The report should be corrected from WAHLBERG (wrong) to WAHLBECK (right) in two parts.

• Most sites have yet to correct DAVID CHIU’s WSOP career results.  It is critical that we get the player statistics correct, as new records are set.  Last week, this notice was forwarded to all media.  Please make the necessary adjustments:

DAVID CHIU -- Most of Chiu's results are accurate.  However, all WSOP records list prior to 1995 in his name do not belong to Chiu.   His first year to cash at the WSOP was in 1996.  Chiu is reported to have cashed in several events during the 1980s.  THESE CASHES BELONG TO A DIFFERENT PLAYER.  His name is David Chew.

Here are the records which should be corrected at all websites, which
are listed under CHIU, but in reality belong to CHEW.  Note that it
was CHEW who finished 4th in the WSOP Main Event in 1984, not CHIU :

1987 18th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit Hold'em (Event Cool
$1,500 buy-in 5/7/1987 24th $1,500

1986 17th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit Hold'em (Event 6)
$1,500 buy-in 5/15/1986 4th $26,370

1986 17th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit Omaha (Event 1)
$100 buy-in 5/10/1986 4th $7,260

1985 16th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo (Event 3)
$1,000 buy-in 5/6/1985 6th $5,960

1982 13th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit 7 Card Stud (Event 13)
$1,000 buy-in 5/21/1982 5th $5,600

1981 12th Annual World Series of Poker
Limit Ace to Five Draw (Event 11)
$1,000 buy-in 5/17/1981 4th $8,800

These results will significantly drop Chiu in career rankings.  I (Nolan Dalla) have spoken with him and he had verified that his first WSOP cash was in 1996.  He was not even a poker player during the 1980s, when these other cashes took place.

• Please note that in the final results for Event #11, the 81st-place finisher was JACK GRIGSBY III.  There is another player with poker results named “JACK GRIGSBY.”  This is the father.  Note that JACK GRIGSBY III should be listed independently.

• Event #3 had the player in 46th place with a misspelled name.  The correct name is BRADLEY BIRARDA.

Here's my hero. Somehow, he does not look like a poker player to me, though I cannot really define what a poker player should look like.

Good spot, & delighted to see that somone is keeping me honest.

I have revisited the post & awarded Neil the coveted enboldenment - I see no reason why, even though he's a Scot, we should not consider him a Brit for the duration of the WSOP.*

* Please take that with a pinch of salt.

Brock (which is short for John) has a background in Magic, which, I seem to recall, several notable poker players also share. Any blonde come the "Magic" Route?

The Winner

·        The 2009 World Series of Poker $2,500 buy-in Six-Handed Limit Hold’em championship is Brock Parker, from Silver Spring, MD.

·        Parker is a 27-year-old professional poker player.  His real first name is John, but he goes by “Brock.”

·        Parker first started playing poker about ten years ago.  But his interest in the game evolved from the card game Magic.

·        Magic is a card game that is similar to poker in that it combines skill, psychology, and luck.  By the time he took his turn in the spotlight of a WSOP final table Parker and others were accustomed to the pressure of playing in front of crowds and for money.  Magic tournaments usually give away prize money which attracts big crowds.

·        Parker is one of a number of top poker players from the Washington, DC area.  He lives just north of the nation’s capital.  Two other close friends and former WSOP gold bracelet winners, Eric Froehlich and Alex Borteh who live nearby, were both on hand to cheer for Parker.  He is also near tournament pro Justin Bonomo, who lives close by.

·        Another top player who is close to Parker and got his start in poker via Magic is David Williams, who won a gold bracelet in 2006.

·        Two-time gold bracelet winner Eric Froehlich stated that he got his start in poker, due largely to Parker’s influence.  “We all played magic together,” Froehlich stated.  “But Brock was the good poker player.  We watched him play and he made all this money and it looked like fun, so we got into it also.  I think a lot of (Magic players) who first got into poker came to it because of Brock...He was part of the Magic scene and he is responsible for many of us becoming poker players.”

·        Parker’s friends noted that Limit Hold’em is his best game.  This is somewhat contrary to conventional wisdom which suggests most younger players prefer No-Limit Hold’em.

·        Parker has known most of his poker friends since he was in his teens.

·        “He’s an online legend, and it’s well deserved,” said Alex Borteh.

·        Borteh added:  “Daniel is great as a player and a person.  But a lot of people get famous because the toot their own horns.  People don’t know Brock because he does not post on poker forums all day or draw attention to himself.  He is a below-the-radar kind of guy”

·        Parker collected $223,697 for first place.  He was also awarded his first WSOP gold bracelet.

·        Parker laughed off the “David versus Goliath” description of the result.  “Yeah right, whatever,” he said.

The Final Table

·        The final table contained only one former WSOP gold bracelet winner – Daniel Negreanu, from Las Vegas, NV.  Nevertheless, that was enough of a presence to attract a standing-room only crowd throughout the competition.

·        The runner up was Daniel Negreanu, from Las Vegas, NV.  The four-time WSOP gold bracelet winner held the chip lead during most of the finale.  But Negreanu had a tough time later and ended up finishing second.  While he has four outright wins, he has three second-place finishes, as well.

·        Negreanu had a shot to win his third Limit Hold’em competition at the WSOP, which would have tied him with Phil Hellmuth in that category.  Instead, Negreanu fell just short.

·        Negreanu was well aware that his final adversary, Brock Parker, was a first-rate player.  However, many spectators viewed the battle as a “David Versus Goliath” battle, with the popular Negreanu getting slain at the end by a relative “unknown.”  Not true.  Fact is, Parker is an extraordinary player, known to many of the top tournament players in the game.

·        When Negreanu lost the final hand and busted out second, there was an audible shock in the air, not only for what had happened, but how quickly the final hand came once the two finalists were heads up.  Negreanu was gracious and congratulatory towards Parker, then exited quickly to play in another tournament.

·        The third-place finisher was Tommi Horkko, from Tampere, Finland.  It’s extraordinary to consider that Horkko came within two spots of joining fellow countryman Villa Wahlbeck as the only Finnish gold bracelet winners in history.  It’s even more of an oddity that this came close to occurring on consecutive days.  Finland went 39 previous years without a gold bracelet and within the past two days has earned a first- and third-place “finish.”

·        The fourth-place finisher was Kevin Hong, from Los Angeles,

·        The fifth-place finisher was former WSOP gold bracelet winner, Barry Shulman, from Las Vegas, NV.  Shulman is the publisher of Card Player magazine, the longest-running publication in poker.  Shulman won his gold bracelet in the Seven-Card Stud Eight-or-Better event in 2002.

·        The sixth-place finisher was Kyle Ray, from Fayetteville, GA.

·        There was no defending champion from last year.  The event was not offered in 2008.

Why, when I enter "" (as in California) is it suddenly showing the A of clubs?

It was fine before Saturday, & I have not touched any knobs.

Kinboshi was asked to make an alteration to ensure the SAS hand histories on the new board appeared as card notations not C A D A etc (I've put gaps in) given the problems in importing IPoker HHs

this will be a bi-product of that

The Event

·        The $2,500 buy-in Limit Hold’em event attracted 367 entrants.  This created a prize pool totaling $844,100.  The top 36 finishers collected prize money.

·        Six-Handed Hold'em emphasizes short-handed poker skills.  Rather than a full table comprised of nine players, each table is played six-handed (or less, as players bust out).  This generally requires competitors to play cards out of the standard range of starting-hands.  It also makes post-flop skill paramount to victory.  The game was included on the WSOP schedule as a concerted effort to measure as diverse a range of poker skills as possible.

·       Six-Handed No-Limit Hold'em first made its WSOP debut in 2005.  This is the sixth six-handed tournament played in WSOP history.

·       Several observers noted that the heads-up match between Parker and Negreanu was perhaps another illustration of a symbolic torch being passed to another generation of poker players.  A decade ago when Negreanu won his first gold bracelet, many believed poker was about to change.  They were right.  Now, Negreanu is in his 30s and there is a new generation of challengers.

·        Negreanu went card dead at the worst possible time of the tournament,  He lost most of the final hands dealt and finally went out just as spectators were settling in for a long heads-up showdown.  The final hand of the night came when Negreanu had K-10 and made a pair of tens.  But Parker had an ace and made a pair of aces, which collected the final pot of the night.

·        Parker was cheered to victory by his own rooting section, comprised of fellow poker pros, two of which were previous WSOP gold bracelet winners – Alex Borteh and Eric “E-Fro” Froehlilch.
