E mail tracing

how easy is it to trace the address/phone number from which an email has been sent from?

is this something the police could do?

a particulary evil e mail has been received and i was just wondering what the crack is?

I would imagine the police would have access to the technology, but unless the content of the email is law-breaking don't know that they'd bother.  Give them a ring and see what they say.

Terry, depending on what email client you're using you should be able to see the headers of the email that will give you some information as to where the email has come from (such as their ISP).

From there you won't be able to get much more information, but if it's a police matter they will be able to request the information from the ISP and follow it up.


I've had to do this in the past with a company I worked for.  An ex-employee had a vendetta and sent in abusive emails and also sent in abuse via the website.  Because we could track his ISP and could see he was on a BT Internet IP range we could then go to the police and BT would tell them who was on that specific IP address at the time the enquiry was made.  We had a file of information that we'd collected and eventually when the police went round to see him they found far worse stuff on his PC and he got done for that rather than for the more 'trivial' stuff he'd been sending in to us.

The IP addy that will be in the properties of the mail will usually only show you a general location of the ISP, unless the sender has a static IP address (then you can get a wealth of info!). However, if you think it might be from someone you already know, and that person has already sent you mail previously (the more recent the better), then it's simply a case of comparing the addresses.

If the email is very serious the police can easily trace it, it takes a fair amount of time as they have to get the ISP to release the account information, the ISP of course won't give this information out lightly....

i beleive it was sent from 1 of the pupils at my sons school,although there was nothing threatning or abusive in it,it wasnt very nice and just wanted to know wheather it was worth following it up?

It's worth informing the police in case other actions happen further down the line. If there is nothing in the email that actually breaks any laws then there is little they will do now, but if those little sods keep up the threats and bullying it could help build a case against them.

If you are going to follow it up with the police, it will have to be fairly quickly.  I'm not sure how long the ISPs are obliged to keep details of the IP allocations for.

No idea tbh (If I remember I'll try and find out tomorrow), though I wouldn't have thought it would be a small period of time. Agreed that Ian needs to report it sooner rather than later though.
