You're right Baron, John Barnes' Player of the Year awards are fact, as are the 72 caps he won and the however many goals he scored for Liverpool in his finest season. His position in the Liverpool pantheon is secured.

I passed the initial comment on 'that' goal based on my perception of his performances for England after it, and I am sure that many (mostly non-Liverpool fans) would agree with me.

As a long-term United supporter I probably do have some bias against Liverpool, but I dare say it's far less than the average Liverpool fan has against United.
As a football fan, I watched, and admired, the Liverpool side of the late 70s and supported them as they won their early European Cups. Cheered as wobbly-legged Grobelaar saved penalites against Roma. Even felt pride that an ex-Cobblers player had scored the Liverpool goal, and notched his pen too.
I was cheering them on at the pub as they came back in Istanbul, and allthough I wasn't sad to see them lose in 07, I wasn't cheering Milan.

Fair dos.

For the record I saw Utd at Old Trafford a couple of times in Europe in the 2007-2008 season when they went on to win it. Dont tell anyone though.

I'm still saying hail marys for the sin.

For a long time, including the time Barnes was playing though I didn't feel many Liverpool players could show the level of game they had at Liverpool when they got on the international field.

Dalglish - there was a campaign to get him dropped from the Scotland team at one point. He was a great, but he kept playing passes for Rush when Rush wasn't playing.

Hansen - while arguably the best Scottish defender in his time, expected a level of understanding from his non-Liverpool teammates that wasn't there - thus leaving holes in the defence - the collision for the USSR goal in Spain being the prime example.

So if Barnes is going to be judged by his international play, then he's not being fairly judged.
