As a non-smoker I think this is a pile of shite... FFS
IF
the governement would give up their huge haul from the tax on tobacco then I'd believe they were serious in trying to ban it.
Leave people alone. They banned smoking in pubs and now you can smell every fart, bit of BO & you can see the people in the place - they all looked better through a smokey haze!!!
Leave it as an open choice (remember them) and pubs put up a sign to say they are smoking or non-smoking - job done. And I'd rather second hand smoke than the non-smoker doing the 'cough cough, handwaving' pish they do to show their disapproval of smokers.
I'd rather put up with the odour then die of lung cancer TYVM
Or go to another pub? Seriously the risk is overplayed anyway FFS. How many old smokers are there? Plenty. If a bit of tobacco smoke cleans up the species by eliminating weak lunged people with a flimsy DNA then it's just darwinism in action anyway.
Darwinsm also selects ignorant twats for elimination too don't forget.
And the government keeps bringing in laws to prevent it too. It's just wrong.
So this is one of the many areas our Government has a duplicitous and hypocritical approach to. You can make that point without implying weak lunged people deserve to die anyway.
lol@ the sensitivity. I thought it was obvious it wasn't meant literally.
FFS I know it's not, but it's still an insensitive thing to say. You might need weak lungs and flimsy DNA to appreciate why though.

I have no problem with banning smoking in doors (although I think that if there was a market for non-smoking pubs they already would have existed before the smoking ban) but to say that people are not allowed to smoke outdoors is ridiculous IMO.
I also don't like people driving in cities and towns as cars pollute the air as well...can we please stop that as well?
It's ridiculous, there used to be a time when smokers and non-smokers just worked shit out; In the workplace and pretty much everywhere. Non-smokinjg H&S are in charge now..so no more working out.

Indeed, like you could have showed your lack of humour without indulging in flaming and insults, which I pretended not to notice.

sad and pathetic.
i remember all the hoohaa at the the time of the smoking ban, with all these arseholes who had never been in a pub in their life proclaiming that they would now enjoy going to pubs, because they were clean.
guess what ? they have stopped going again. They have found some other pathetic thing that they dont like about pubs to use as an excuse for not going.
take a drive/walk/cycle through any small town these days and count the number of for sale boards up on pubs. You can also go into most pubs and get your pick of where to sit, since they are being deserted in droves. hundred of pubs are closing every month.
in all seriousness, as a smoker, I wouldnt mind if the government was serious about it - in which case ban it completely. But we all know if they did that, then the economy would completely collapse. So despite all their words and posturing, they are as dependant on the smokers and I am on the marlboro.

I don't want a ban on anything, not even smoking ironically, but I'm still allowed to be offended if I don't like the joke and say so.

haha not biased at all......
People who smoke obv want to smoke where u want
People who don't- don't want to subject themselves to lung cancer
A total ban would be unfair- I still maintain the current ban is fair for all. Kill yourself if you want to- don't take others with you imo

OK, as I'm allowed to be offended by someone calling me a twat, although I'm not allowed to tell him to f*** off.
But run me through your thought process that took that so seriously? You know, when you read that sentence "If a bit of tobacco smoke cleans up the species by eliminating weak lunged people with a flimsy DNA then it's just darwinism in action anyway." did you think 'God, that bastard Rod's advocating a Hitleresque final solution for the atshmatics & people prone to cancer, what an ignorant twat'?
If I'd said we should release tigers into the street to reduce the number of fat people would you have taken it seriously as well?
Applogies to the gravitationally challenged among us, this is not a call to have you hunted and eaten by big stripy cats, but purely the obvious use of hyperbole to exagerate a point in a humourous manner.

this for me.
The ironic thing about banning smoking in pubs is alcohol kills more people than cigarettes. I've never asked anyone to stop smoking and never had a problem with not going to certain pubs because I knew they'd be smokey as I felt I'd sound a bit daft asking someone not to blow their cancerous smoke in my face while I was busy saturating my liver with German lager and poisoning my blood stream with shots of Turkish whiskey.

This is nothing to do with the smoking ban. It is because lots of greedy people opened lots of new pubs when the economy was booming and lots of people had lots of disposable income.
Now that people have less disposable income they don't go to pubs as much because they can't afford it, hence some pubs have to close.
In fact if they banned smoking completely I suspect pubs would be better off because previous smokers who now had more disposable income would need an alternative. The pub for half a mild seems the perfect substitute.

Not sure about this either. The social costs of smoking are huge hence the reason for taxing it so highly.
Just picking up all the dirty fag ends that get thrown on the floor must cost councils thousands every year.
The strain on the NHS because of smoking obviously makes this pale in to insignificance as that must run in to billions.

This quote from the Middlesbrough Theatre website
Smoking Policy: Smoking is not permitted in
or near
the theatre. (my bold)
This means that to smoke you have to stand more than 5yards from ashtrays fixed to the wall at the front of the building ....

So the weathers picked up and the non smokers are pissed all the smokers are sitting on the same chairs in the beer garden that we sat on in the winter when it was snowing.
When it's raining they will forget about it again.
