Nothing to lose imo- he's on pay as your play. If he's shite we'll ship him out but I've often heard people say that an average striker will score more goals at United simply due the chances they'd get.

Mercenary or not, he has a reason to succeed with the world cup coming up.

i think its a great buy, his goal return everywhere is outstanding, just if he stays fit.

lol everywhere? where? In league football his record is poor. <20 goals every season

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/jim-white/article/9652/

Jimmy White makes sense, me thinks.

About him being a mercenary..lol very hard at that. The guy is looking for a job, should he not go to ManU because he once played for Liverpool? Or because he left to go to Real, the biggest club in the world at that time? Liverpool didn't want him back after he came back from Real and they don't want him now. Owen is doing the best thing for his career ATM..teaming up with Rooney at ManU is the best way for him to get in the frame for the England job again.

Fair play to him for taking a big pay cut and not going to Stoke or some other club where he might make more money (not taking into account bonusses and all that) but going to a team where he can achieve something.

I agree on his choice now at this stage because let's be honest, who else is goin to ofer him CL football? I wont hold it against him.

His move to Real isn't a huge problem for me either but it was the timing of the move and the way he went about getting it that annoyed me a little. He basically left us with no move for anyone else.

His move to Newcastle is what really made me dislike he guy. He knew he could have held out for a move to Liverpool by calling Madrid's bluff and at very worst having to spend one more season at Real, where he was getting semi-cult status with some quarters of their fans a la Guti, but England came first and knowing Newcastle under Souness would be shocking he still went there asically killing off four years of his career. He openly told everyone before the move that they weren't his first choice then tried to insult both sets of fans by claiming it's where he wanted to be.

As a player I really rate him (30 odd goals in 65 odd games for Newcastle tells it's own story) and in terms of self belief he's a borderline cocky, in a good way, when it comes to his own ability. The guy is just a bit of a c*ck though.

He'll do a good job for Utd if fit but he'd have not fitted in to our style of play any more without his electric pace.
