Freak stuff
Suspension spring comes off Barrichello's Brawn at the back and bounces up as Massa follows, hitting the LHS of his helmet at 175mph
Injuries include fractured skull, brain concussion. Operation required
A nasty reminder of the often unexpected dangers these guys face especially in the light of the death of Henry Surtees last week

Latest reports are saying he is in a bad way. Let's hope he pulls through.
Really freakish that two similar incidents occur so close together.

From AP;
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hospital officials say Formula One driver Felipe Massa is in "life-threatening" condition after surgery for a fractured skull from a high-speed crash at Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
Officials at the AEK military hospital said Saturday that Massa will be kept sedated on a respirator in an intensive care unit.
Medical director Peter Bazso said at a news conference that "Massa's condition is serious, life-threatening but stable."
Bazso and chief surgeon Lajos Zsiros say they expect Massa to be awoken Sunday.
The 28-year-old Brazilian had surgery one hour after arriving at the hospital, the doctors said.
Massa was struck in the helmet by a loose part from another car and his car slammed straight into a tire barrier.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Just heard an interview from Barrichelo saying he went to see Massa and it looks like all will be well.

His skull and brain injuries aside, it is damage to Felipe Massa's left eye that may pose the biggest danger to his racing career.
Robert Veres was the surgeon who operated on the Ferrari driver on Saturday night, and he has revealed that Massa's eye was hurt in the qualifying accident but doesn't "know the quality of this damage."
It is believed that tests have shown no major structural damage to the eye, but that more detailed examinations or treatment are not possible while he is in coma with more pressing health risks.
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo visited the central Budapest AEK hospital on Monday, and La Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy reports that he and team boss Stefano Domenicali will return by private jet on Tuesday.
Montezemolo said: "The most important thing is the recovery of the man, not the driver.
We have now returned to Maranello but tomorrow we will be back with Felipe."
He added that Ferrari's priority is Massa's health, but that the team will not "wait too long" before considerations about his replacement begin.
It is also reported, by Brazil's TV Globo, that Massa may be transferred later this week from Budapest to Paris' Pitie-Salpetriere hospital, which has links with the FIA and has treated patients including Michael Schumacher and Ronaldo.

Hopefully he will make a full recovery.
Maybe my memory is failing, but wasn't Senna killed at the Tamburello corner and Ratzenberger at the Gilles Villeneuve corner?
