You can use a product called called ERD (emergency recovery disc) by Winternals for pre vista machines. The latest versions may also do vista but not sure.
Basically you boot the pc with the ERD disc in the drive ensuring that boot from cd is enabled or by pressing F8 (i think). Once loaded there are a few tools which can be used one of them being a password changing tool.

It is sometimes possible to log in to the default administrator account, and then delete the passworded account. I haven't done it for some time, but from memory try starting the machines in safe mode (as soon as you power on the machine, start tapping the F8 key, then choose Safe Mode from the boot options menu). Once it boots into the operating system, go to the control panel > user accounts, you should be able to create a new administrator account with new passwords.

Not sure if once you've rebooted if you will be able to go back to the user account area and delete the original problem account, it's worth a try though.

If that is the case then removing the CMOS battery for a while would be worth a try, however, it may make the BIOS kick in with the default password instead - then you would have to find the motherboard manufacturers default password etc etc, hopefully not though!

I've never come across anyone using the BIOS passwords though, so never had to deal with this issue other than in theory.... pretty sure it can't be that hard to remedy.

Does it chunder away, whirr, start Windows and then ask you for a password or does it ask almost immediately you turn it on in big 'ol text mode?

The latter would be a BIOS password which none of the other suggestions so far would help with.

But I Could Be Wrong.

Will this still work if there is a password on the Admin account? Not so sure myself.

I'm not talking about a normal account that has admin privileges, I mean the hidden admin account.  But, if someone has gone to the lengths of changing that hidden admin account's password then it won't work.

But, if it does work (as I've just double checked on Kev's PC) you will be able to remove any other previous admin accounts.

Download ophcrack live cd.

This CD boots and just lists all passwords after a few minutes.

http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php?type=livecd

I use it all the time when cleaning up virused PC's etc.
