I have a laptop and a desk top PC, do they both have a unique IP address, or is the IP address from our internet connection?

your PC and laptop will prob have an IP address of something like 192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.3 as they are machines inside your router (not directly connected to web).

Your external IP address will be that of your router.

click START > RUN > cmd {return} > oldie back and white dos text box will come up > type ipconfig and your details should appear
