those things that people put by their chips in live events ( I think Matt has a crystal monkey) - what are they for and would I need one if I was to venture out to a card room and when would I use it?

thanks Cheesy

They are card protectors and you would place one on top of your hole cards to prevent any 'accidents' where the dealer collects your cards by mistake.  You should protect your cards at all times but you can always use a chip if you don't have a card protector.   I use a Hendon mob version I won in an online tournament, but, as Matt's crystal monkey dictates, anything of a reasonable size with a bit of weight will do.

Finally, it is particularly important to protect your cards if you are in early or late position, primarily because the dealer can reach your cards more easily!

i quite agree - everyone knows me on pokerstars as "monkey boy" thanks to BigArmo so when going over to the bahamas for last years WPT event i decided to buy a card protector that people would remember. I always remember my mum having some silver crystal figurines of various animals and so wondered if they did a monkey one. searching on their website i found that they actually did two but it took me a long time to find a shop that actually sold one.

It was worth it in the end and is quite often the topic of conversation when i first sit down at a table and when i get knocked out earlier than expected i can blame "mystic monkey" for any misreads!!

As soon as i am dealt my cards he sits on them til its my turn to act and then i will look at my cards and either muck them or he goes back on top and i play. You need to be extra careful if sitting in seats 1 or 10 (sometimes 11 depending on how crowded table is) because if you don't protect your cards the dealer may well take them thinking that you are folding. I have seen many a player (in any seat) lose their hand because they are facing the other way talking and the dealer will just collect their cards assuming that they are not playing the hand.

When is the line of blondepoker card protectors and such merchandise coming out?

You could have, for example, a caracature of DC or Tikays face holding a BP logo... (c) 2005 mikkysworld ltd all rights reserved, I want a %age btw

Whilst in Barcelona earlier this year, James and I went to Park Guell. I've seen pictures of some of Gaudi's work but to see it in the flesh is something else. Later in the day we came across a little miniature of the Gaudi Dragon, and I thought what an excellent card protector it would make.

Please to say on it's first live outing, I came a respectable 3rd in the tourny so it's turned into an instant lucky charm now too! It can't be stressed enough how important they can be, they player across from me had his cards mucked when it was just me and him in the hand, all for not protecing them  Roll Eyes of course good little dragon was standing guard on mine  Cheesy

When choosing card protectors, be careful to pick something that won't mark the cards

Quite true, forgot to mention that. Mystic Monkey has twice been told off for getting "caught short" whilst we were in the middle of the hand - very very embarrasing!! Sad

Cheesy  and good point.  I'll wait till I see something special.  In fact, I'll wait till I play live, then get something special!
