Try to maintain a consistent routine.
This basically means getting enough sleep, in a consistent pattern every day.
You know when you want to playing sessions so just work around that.

I think you have to try and sleep like 5-1 or 6-2 and then do something active from like 1/2-5/6 like go to the gym or play tennis or golf or whatever while its daytime.
Then play poker 6pm onwards to your hearts content.
Thats the pattern iv been trying to get in for months, but it slips from time to time and is hard to recuperate.

Making a point of exercising/getting out of the house is probably the single best thing you can do.
What do you do after a session? Go straight to bed? Review the session? Unwind in some way?
What you do after is probably informing your sleep issues. If you go straight from playing to bed, whether its a winner of a loser, you have not put poker away properly. Much better to get into a habit of reviewing the session in some way (studying hands, posting hands on forums etc whatever it is you do) and taking some time out to relax with something non poker to clear your head. In an ideal world that would be going to the gym but with the hours you do that might not be possible, but watching something fun on TV (family guy is an excellent distraction), playing on a playstation etc will help clear your head.
Failing that, a good tommy tank before bed usually does the trick.

My problem is, although I'm not usually in bed before 5, I wake up around 10 and can't sleep any longer. Take this morning for instance, I didn't get to bed until 4:45, but here I am again. I've been up for an hour already and it's only 9:15.....

Toby are you playing more MTT's or cash?
I'd say really make a huge effort to play a schedule that fits in with what those around you are doing, which will normally be up at 9 etc.
Maybe say to yourself that you won't play a hand until you've put a workout in. This won't mean you're playing more tired but in fact less so. You'll feel more fresh and focused once training.

I think its very difficult, but like every lifestyle you have to find the balance that suits you, self discipline ftw

The sleep problems come with being mentally tired, but not physically tired - that's an unhealthy fatigue.
As others have said, you have to make a real effort to be as active as possible - not only will it help you sleep better but will make you more awake when you're playing.
