Is it the derailleur gear mechanism from a chopper?
so obv wrong - raleighs (choppers and grifters) didnt have derailleur mechanisms. they had a 3-speed wheel-hub based gearing... Mine wasn't a Raleigh. It had a derailleur mechanism. who else made choppers ? i thought it was only raleigh...

if I was in a Derby city centre, would I be able to get my hands on one of these if I had 1 hour, a helicopter, a farmer, a golf buggy & £50 to my name?

It had a derailleur mechanism. who else made choppers ? i thought it was only raleigh... Generic term for a bike with a big back wheel, a small front wheel and a long bench seat. I'll see if I can dig out an old photo of it. Everyone else in the street had Grifters or BMXs and could do wheelies and other fun stuff. I was lucky if I could pedal mine up the hill. I could get three people on the seat though, but that was hardly compensation - unless it was Esther...
