The collar badge of the number 7 says almost deffo French.
The French use/used regiment numbers as collar badges (we called them collar dogs.)
This would indicate the 7th regiment, most pics I found with the collar badges as numbers tend to be representative of Infantry regiments.
At work at the mo, but will have a better search tonight

The more I look into it the less confident I am that it is actually military.
Greatcoat but with what looks like George (mess) boots/ comfy shoes as opposed to working boots. No rank insignia, even the privates had at least a chevron.
Greatcoat seems to have a ribbed collar which I've never seen before. There seems to be a T-bar under the top button and what looks like a chain running between the 2nd and 4th buttons indicating possibly a watch or whistle.
Looking more probably Police or a man of standing, stationmaster? (were held in high regard many years ago) that sort of thing.
And then there is the white gloves, if for everyday use in his job, I can only think it would be for signalling, so the hand signals would stand out.
I'm hooked again, at least I have something to do for the weekend - lol

Cheers Geo,
I've never heard of "George" Boots, thats new to me.
Maybe a French Railway Guard in Yorkshire!!!
Don't bust a gut Geo. This sort of stuff is on going for me, never a rush job.
I've a few more Military photos to identify, I'll post them up sometime.

George boots are an ankle length boot used by Officers and SNCO's with mess dress. I have a couple of items I might post for your opinions once I get them uploaded.

The railway theme might not be that far off.
Old picture of railway staff at Dunston station near Newcastle
Similar caps, no Greatcoats but they do have collar insignia.

The wife picked this up in a charity shop in Edinburgh for a tenner.
It's a lithograph (original frame) by JR Skeaping, although he did do drawings of animals he was more famous for his sculpture and was recognised as one of the UK's top sculptors.
He has printed his name and also signed this piece.
BTW the white frames at the botton are the reflection of two pis on opposite wall and not on the pic.
Thoughts?

I'm guessing it's are an ordinary edition, ie not numbered eg 1/75. If so value is up to £100. Signed & numbered, value up to £250. Original drawings sell in the region of £500+

Thanks Tonji,
It's a simple but lovely sketch, very pleasing to view. I did find a site at the time that had the original on it for £1500. Can't find it now.
As photos seem to be your speciality I'll post a wonderful photo of Edinburgh castle from 1940's that we picked up a couple of weeks ago. Just trying to get a decent photo of it.

Hi all,
another...
2 carte de visite photographs of the same fellow (I think), circa 1860/70s St Louis, Missouri. Indistinct signature on the back.
I assume its American Civil War era, the cross on the uniform makes me think a Chaplain.
Anyhow, anyone with any thoughts or ideas.
Cheers,
Tonji.
