Caught a bunch of guys outside my house a while back, helping the environment by liberating my 'scrap' since 'it didn't seem much use to me'. Been trying to setup a webcam / IPcam based system for monitoring/recording. Have finally found the software, H264 Webcam, but am still stuck on the cameras. Preferably would have an outdoor wireless IP cam but the wireless range on these is never good enough and the pic quality is just ok. Can I use a good hi res webcam in a housing? USB only goes so far and I need 20metres.... Are there systems where you just record on to a data card direct?
Been working on this problem for ages without a decent solution Sad
IR nightvision would be nice, but not crucial.

The first time I have ever paid for software from the net:

http://www.h264soft.com/

Worth every penny, does everything you need, streams from USB webcams, IPcams, forwards to FTP, email, records video, audible alert, has presets for loads of brands.
The software that comes with £80+ IP cams is unbelievably poor.

It can mate, yep, video uses up a loot of hard drive space, so the software has customizable 'motion detection' for each cam, and you can create motion detection zones in each one to suppress false alarms from clouds and tree motion.

My problem is the camera really, for here and another place I need cameras that are 20m and 40m from the PC, I don't even know if an ethernet cable would work that far away? Would it be possible to even mount a camera with a netbook concealed in a small space inside an outhouse?

Loads of cams on Ebay, mostly from Hong Kong, don't seem to do the job though.

Some of them even have 'night vision'...look closely and you see it's a camera, with a light. lol.

A company quoted similar work for my old man, prices starting at £2000. He just needs a security camera, not a tv show?

No you still use the same cable.

You have to use a device called a midspan at the oc end which will split the power and data down your cat5e cable.

At the camera end you will have another splitter if you are using a mains powered camera or just plug straight in if the camera has built in PoE.

How much money are you planning on spending on cameras?

Oh and cat5e cable isn't well expensive. You can get it for £40 for a 300m box.

Hi, Thanks for that. My budget is £500 for the one with the top end setup.

I have also just realised that I have to purchase two POE switches for something else :s These look like £80 each min. Ak!
