cant you just set up a web cam to record all the time u aint there? would that use all memeory in the pc/laptop been thinking bout this myself?
It can mate, yep, video uses up a loot of hard drive space, so the software has customizable 'motion detection' for each cam, and you can create motion detection zones in each one to suppress false alarms from clouds and tree motion.
My problem is the camera really, for here and another place I need cameras that are 20m and 40m from the PC, I don't even know if an ethernet cable would work that far away? Would it be possible to even mount a camera with a netbook concealed in a small space inside an outhouse?
Loads of cams on Ebay, mostly from Hong Kong, don't seem to do the job though.
Some of them even have 'night vision'...look closely and you see it's a camera, with a light. lol.
ethernet cable will work up to 100m.
there is special cable you can buy which works better and lasts longer outdoors
cheers! No degradation?
I saw something about POE PowerOverEthernet, is that a different type of cable?
No you still use the same cable.
You have to use a device called a midspan at the oc end which will split the power and data down your cat5e cable.
At the camera end you will have another splitter if you are using a mains powered camera or just plug straight in if the camera has built in PoE.
How much money are you planning on spending on cameras?
Oh and cat5e cable isn't well expensive. You can get it for £40 for a 300m box.
Hi, Thanks for that. My budget is £500 for the one with the top end setup.
I have also just realised that I have to purchase two POE switches for something else :s These look like £80 each min. Ak!
two PoE switches? What for? How many devices have you got? If you want one midspan for each device you can get them for about 20 squids. They aren't anything special.
About your night vision comments btw. Like you said a lot of cameras on ebay are just normal cameras with a light attached.
The better ones have an auto filter and work in colour during the day then switch to b & w in low light conditions. Some have a IR filter and IR light as well.
You need to look at things like built in heaters as well. Cameras tend to suffer from condensation and if they don't have a built in heater they'll just steam up.
Once you start looking at heaters then you can't use PoE any more because it only works at a limited wattage. There is new high powered PoE that's just recently come out (25watts instead of 15 if I remember correctly) enabling you to use heaters and also PTZ cameras (pan/tilt/zoom) which wasn't possible before. It's obviously more expensive though cus it's new, only came out last month.
Sorry to add to your confusion but loads of people install a camera set up and are disappointed. Sometimes it's worth spending a bit more to make sure you achieve what you want.
Is the £500 for the whole set up or was that just for the 1 main camera?

saw in the news today that a guy got charged with murder after stabbing to death a burgler, different than shooting a burgler imo and more acceptable, you have to get your hands dirty stabbing someone, not like being 10 feet away shooting them, i would stab someone if they drummed my gaff, i cant see how you wouldnt really, you wake up and hear something, everyones giot a knife or sword or some shit next to their bed so you grab that then when you confront the burgler whats supposed to happen, if you lot have a tear up you're gonna stab him, i cant see anyway around that, i mean what would you do if you head someone in your house lay in bed like a prick untill they left?

my old man sorted out a few lads that tried to rob my bike when i was a kid, gave em a hiding with a metal bar he had by the side of his bed. Police came round and gave him the thumbs up. about 20 years ago now obv!

Hi, Thanks a lot for your help.
I just bought a set of these for no good reason
http://www.wirelessworld.it/upload/File/GeoDesy/Sistemi%20Compatti/Brochure%20Fornitore/PicoNext.pdf
Got them for £30, the switches will cost hundreds, fml lol
Looks like they need dualPoE for powering the window heaters? Are they rubbish with no window heating?
I have a big problem on one location of trespass and need really good video/stills. Looked like the range of the IR beam is normally too limited, I need about 40 m.
I saw one camera that seems to 'combine' low light visible light range feed with an IR feed to produce an enhanced picture, this looks quite nice.
I can spend about £5-600 on one site, £200 at another. I have already bought
-New Router (Belkin Rangemax) to reach the
-Wireless HawkingTech IP camera, which is similar to the
-EDimax IP (ethernet) camera, they're just clones, but one is wireless.
Both cameras are pretty poor at adjusting to low light conditions/autoexposure, and the resolution isn't great either. In fact the best camera I have is my Minoru 3D webcam, the only problem is its range (USB)
My insurer has offered me a decent discount for putting 2 cameras in.
Cheers for all the help

All these do is transmit your data from your pc to your camera and vice versa. You will still need to get power to your camera location both for the remote end of the laser and also the of course the camera itself.
If you look at the picture it shows them being used to link 2 sites. Your camera will effectively be the other site.
You don't need PoE switches to power these devices. You can use a standard switch which I assume you already have and plug in a PoE adaptor. I think I mentioned them earlier. They are known as midspans and are about £20 to £30.
That being said I do think you may have gone down the wrong lines with these laser links. They are an absolute nightmare to use and QoS can be very bad unless you have expensive ones.
If there's any way you can get a cat 5e cable to your camera location you will be much better off. Wireless is very good if done properly but comes with problems that you could probably do without. Also at 40m you're starting to push the limits of low cost devices.
If you've already got a PC and an ethernet switch all you need now is an IP camera. I'd spend as much as possible on your camera to get the best quality. You see so many sites that try to save a few quid on the camera and end up with poor quality images.
For £600 you'll get something very good to be honest. You may even be able to get a PTZ (pan / tilt / zoom) which you can move about from your pc.
You'll definitely get a good quality fixed lens camera which will give good quality imaging.
I'll PM you a link to the cameras that we use for our biggest customer. We've installed hundreds of these and they are very good cameras all designed for IP use.
If you have a look through the site there's a few bits on installation etc. that might help you a bit.

I got the laser devices by accident, they were being thrown in with something else I bought but I thought I needed a POE switch, you just saved me quite a bit of money
Am hopefully going to pick up a couple of these to test with

Thanks a lot for the pm links.
Will go down the CAT 5 route I think and just pass the Lasers on.
By network switch I'm thinking a regular ethernet modem router will suffice?
Many thanks,I appreciate it!

Yup that's the fellas. I've used PowerDSine before and they're fine.
Yes your standard router should work fine. No reason why not.
Keep me informed on your progress. Good luck.
