Hi.
My sister has just joined the technological age,and bought herself a lappy and an internet connection from sky.
The man in the shop has told her she needs to hardwire the internet to the lappy first then switch to wireless!.
I'm sure this is wrong, and you can just go straight to wireless.
Depends on connection. If your router needs security setting up on it, a lot of routers don't allow access to the config through a wireless connection initially. That may be what he was talking about. Even if it's possible, it may be easier to set wireless security while wired in, as otherwise you set an encryption method/key on the router and it insta-deconnects you. Can be a bit of a pain. Unless the kit from Sky comes pre-configured for this stuff - I don't know.
It can be easier to do all your initial windows updates while wired in as well, just for speed/reliability if nothing else.
And what that thingy called that you plug your phone line and internet cable into that the goes in your phone point?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
I think you're talking about a microfilter? Splits incoming phone line into ADSL and phone frequencies. Modems/router kits usually come with 1 or 2.
