It must feel quite exciting to be handing your notice in without having another job, to walk into the unknown, to toss the dice of fortune into the air and see where they may land. Sure you could throw a six and land your dream job. But then again you could throw a one. A big fat one. Don't hand your notice in. Don't do it man. That shit office is gonna seem like a pretty sweet memory when you're down the sewer.

I hear ya, I really do. But it's the sleepless nights and stress that I'm leaving, not the office as such. I've been put in a position whereby I'm setup to fail. It's a small(ish) independent company with 2 directors, 1 nice, 1 not-so-nice. Fortunately the nice one is my boss and I get a pretty easy time on the whole but with the recession hitting us harder now the running of the business is getting trickier and I've become "the fall guy". If I stay I'll be gone at the end of December, or, I can hold my head high and walk out into the unknown - hopefully with more success than Captain Oates.

Things aren't black and white but it just feels like I've got the chance to make a big change in my life so would quite like to give it a go...

sounds very similar to my situation. things haven't worked out for me jobwise (yet) but I couldn't stay in that environment. wrote a lot about it on my blog if you want a read.

The job might seem bad but look at the advantages of working in an office. You must have some fitty female colleagues so there's always the chance of an office romance. What chance have you got of romance when you're knee deep in shit? Nothing wrong with working in the sewer? On Thursday night before handing your notice in go out for the night and assume the role of sewer man to see what life could be like. Approach girls and introduce yourself as smelly sewer man and see how much sex you get. People you meet will pinch their nose with their fingers as they laugh you away. You will have no friends. Your life will be in ruins. On Friday morning on the way to your nice office decide not to hand your notice in and have a chuckle about your silly poo man idea.

For me it's because i won't be joining the Dole queue.  I won't be living the "balla" lifestyle I've got 4 months worth of living cost savings to use. I'll have a job within 4 months even if I'm ridiculously over qualified for it...

If they are goping to be getting rid of you by end of year anyway, handing your notice in at end of Nov prolly means the same time frame?  Wouldn't it be better to encourage them to force you out with something of a payoff?

For me it's because i won't be joining the Dole queue.  I won't be living the "balla" lifestyle I've got 4 months worth of living cost savings to use. I'll have a job within 4 months even if I'm ridiculously over qualified for it...

It'll never happen, 4 people went over the summer without a sniff of redundency. Because we are so small I've got no chance of any money, and I haven't got the resources to fight them on legal grounds for unfair dismisal.

You dont need to fight a legal battle to get redundancy, they are breaking the law if they dont pay it. Its shit anyway the basic amount they have to pay, something like 1 weeks salary per yeay.

Disagree with you on that stu,mate of mine been out of work for a while and i had a look at applying for a few jobs for him as i didn't believe him when he said he was trying and just was nowt,i applied for a bout 10 jobs for him ,he's got good GCSE's and an engineering apprenticeship,sure did get an interview with any of them
