How much for a runaround?

My mate is looking to buy a runaround motor, no frills, not even nice looking, just reliable. How much do you have to shell out for the best chance of reliability and least likelihood of forking out endlessly for repairs? What are the best models to go for? Betterto go to a dealer than private?
He's a real nit.

If you know what you're looking for, you can buy a reliable runabout for less than £500. If you don't, you can easily spend 5k on a lump of corruption.

I would recommend getting something Japanese for reliability.

Is it just me, but I keep reading the title of this thread in the 'view new posts' and think it says "How much for a reacharound?"
Just me I guess

drinks petrol like a fish, not cheap if it goes wrong, but the most fun you will have for a grand. guaranteed.
