dont ask why but i have 2 sky digital dishes on my roof, 1 is and has been unconnected for a number of years, the other one is full with HD and 2 normal sky boxes connected, is it practical or even legal to use the other dish in the system so that i can replace one of the sky boxes with a sky+ box i have spare and get 5 feeds into the house instead of the maximium 4 you get from 1 dish?

You own the dish and the Sky boxes so you can do what you want with them.
If you want Sky+ though you have to pay a subscription but I'm sure they won't care that you already have a dish.
If you're planning on getting a dodgy card then obviously it's not legal.
Do you live on your own Iron? If you do don't you think you'd be better off with some kind of multiroom system? Even a magic eye would do.
Just means that you'd only have the HD box but could watch it in every room (not in full HD though as it would go via non HD cabling).
Might save you a few quid if you're paying a Sky multiroom subscription which are a complete rip off.

i have my own place built onto my folks house so they get to watch what they want up stairs (lounge and office) while i get to watch what i want in my part of the house. so we have 2 multi room payments
with anolog going offline here sometime this year i am trying to find a way that my mum can watch/tape her soaps my dad can watch the boxing and i can watch my porn/sport/whatever
after analog goes down i dont know how my parents will be able to record anything while watching another program or tape a program on ch4 then another on itv while they are out of the house as they will only be able to record through sky

Have sky said you can't do it using your current dish? If i read correctly you have 1HD box and 2 standard boxes and you want to upgrade one of them to a Sky+ box. This should be possible to do on one dish. When my brother and i both still lived at our parents gaff we had 1HD, 1 sky+ and 2 standard sky boxes all through one dish. There were a fair few cables coming from it but we never had any problems.

As i understand it after a year of subscribing to Sky the equipment is now yours so you can do what you want with the dishes as long as you pay the correct subsciption.
FWIW you can now get an Octo lnb(the thing that points back at your dish)so you could run 8 feeds from one dish, going for £20 on Ebay.

Is your house an extension to your parents or a seperate dwelling? If it is a separate dwelling and has its own mains electrical supply you should not share a dish with your parents. I would suggest for safety reasons using both dishes and having your equipment on one dish and your parents on another.

So at the moment your mum and dad watch terrestrial tv and you want them to be able to continue to do so after everything goes digital? I think that's what you're trying to achieve. Why not just get a digital tuner that plugs in to your aerial then in to your tv? Something like this should do it http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5322051/Trail/searchtext%3EFREEVIEW.htm

+1 You don't need so much damn sky
Can you not get boxes that record terrestrial TV like sky+ does. There's loads of channels on freeview, I'm sure the 3 of you can get by without 15 sky subscriptions.

first house is an extension
2nd parents have 2 sky boxes, 1 in office and 1 in lounge, they are big fans of watching sport so watch mainly the 4 main channels plus sky sports and the news channels from the multi room subscriptions we currently have.
we used to have 2 sky subscription in the house hence the 2 dishes but we got talked into saving money and running it all through the one subscription but we still have 2 sky digital dishes and one analog dish on roof
i supposr the real question is can i get a 5th feed to supply replace one of the sky boxes with a sky plus + to allow it both feeds and to record without incurring any extra cost (apart from the fitting of the cables etc cause i aint going into the loft and my dads older than tikay)

If it's not a 'seperate dwelling' you probably shouldn't have two dishes - without planning permission. Although planning rules are different abroad, so just ignore that!
