I watched This is England on 4od last night, hadn't seen it before and thought it was pretty good, I was surprised at how graphic it was in parts but guess pretty much anything goes nowadays, is there just the 4 eps of it yeah ? I had thought there was 2 seasons of it ?

Also watched One flew over the cuckoo's nest the other day, had already seen it but it's well worth watching again, I'm probably not old enough to say this but they really don't make them like that anymore Smiley. Superb performances by so many of the actors. I really do think the regurgitated shit that's came out over the last few years has been really poor, other than the Hangover which although it's abs hilarious and one of my favourite films that I've watched more than any other film it's not like it's such an imaginative story or has any originality about it. I can't really think of any film I've watched in the last five years where at the end of it I thought, wow that was superb and will become a classic. Anyone suggest one film that peope will still be watching in 20 years time and think that was a bit special ?

It's a point, but I think it's the audience's fault as much as the filmmakers. I think there are still films being made that are good stories, and make you think, but the vast majority of people are just interested in going to the blockbusters, and I think that trend is getting worse. How many of the top 25 have you actually seen (or even heard of).

Out of that lot, Shutter Island and Kick Ass would be near the top for me. True Grit is superb (only recently seen), but given it's a remake doesn't exactly the count as original. Obviously any sequels can't really come into the "original" category either. But there is still a decent amount of good stuff being made.

and you have a pretty decent selection of memorable stuff. Memento. Up. Eternal Sunshine. Slumdog. No Country for Old Men.

I also rewatched One Flew.. as well. Incredible film. But I'm not so downcast about recent stuff. You just have to hunt for the pearls a bit harder.

This is England 86 is the tv series with 4 episodes. I take it you have seen This is England the film?? Majority of stuff by Shane Meadows is decent. Deadman's shoes and a room for romeo brass are both superb and must watches imo also a fan of Paddy Considine.

It's hard to say what will become classic, especially from within the last 5 years, 'The Departed' has probs been my fav but then again that was a blockbuster hollywood remake.

Films that i reckon will be classics District 9, Slumdog millionaire, The Prestige, Super 8 which will be this generation's E.T/Goonies. Inglorius Basterds will get bigger as time goes on imo.

I watch tonnes of films that are not exactly mainstream but could turn into cult classics, i will throw em out there: Mr Nobody, In Bruges, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Rise of the footsoldier.

A lot of stuff depends what age, what is going on etc when you watch them, for me it will always be Stand by Me. Great coming of age movie! But from my teens i like Scum, I.D, Romper stomper etc

yep. Slumdog defo and i reckon Inglorious will get bigger and bigger, only been out 2 yrs and once the younger generation become Tarrantino fanboys then it will snowball + its one of those films that is actually a lot better second time round.

Can´t think of any true greats made in the last 10 years. The Motorcycle Diaries and Amelie would be my favourites of the last decade. One Flew Over the Cuckoo´s Nest and Life is Beautiful are far and away my favourites all time.

I agree with the comment that it is largely providing audiences with what they want that has diminished the chance of great film being made. A film like The Inbetweeners is a good example of the problem. Why bother trying to make a great film when schoolboy japes are so popular? Just another example of the media dumbing everything down.

I can see Slumdog being repeated on telly an awful lot as it's a fell-good do-nothing movie. But I thought it was pretty awful really.

Inglorious might be better the 2nd time around, wouldn't surprise me really as it was bloody awful the first time round.

I'm almost thinking Tarrantino fluked Pulp Fiction such has the quality of his movies been.

Admittedly majority of my fav films are late 80s/90s but i still think there have been some true great films in the last decade, if there is any on this list you haven't seen please watch.

City of God (2002), The Departed (2006), The Prestige (2006), A Prophet (2009), Donnie Darko (2001), Let the Right One In (2008), A Beautiful Mind (2001), The Machinist (2004) ,Joyeux Noel (2005) ,The Pianist (2002), V for Vendetta (2006) probs the best comedy of recent: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

Couple just out of the last decade:

Fight Club, Gladiator, Memento.

Glad you said almost else that would be a redic comment. Think we have abused Monda's diary enough for today already so wont bother defending Quentin's honour.

I stand at least partially corrected :-), there are some great films in that lot. I love A Beautiful Mind, Donnie Darko and City of God.

Heard of pretty much all of them and seen at least half, not one of them are great films, Shutter Island is good, you really think anyone will watch Kick Ass in five years time nevermind 20 years time ? The fact The Fighter is 13th pretty much proves my point, yeah it's decent as Bale puts in a great performance etc but lacks any sort of originality whatsoever and nothing about it made you actually think. Inception is number 1 and I pretty much agree with that as that did at least have some originalness to it and provoked some thought but it isn't a great film.

Not seen 'The Fighter' yet, but as it's based on Micky Ward's life it's bound to be good.
