ask the guard for a ruling

I am pretty sure the guard had said they were in the right before I showed up.

They kept saying "go and ask the guard, he'll tell you the same"

They're bluffing.

Probably if it was full n standing the guard would not have even tried to go through the train.

Given up MY seat, hell no.

Giving up the empty seat next to me, yes. Would choose the most needy though.

Lets say I am socially inept and miserable so I don't want to sit next to anyone on a train so I book out 4 seats. Why should I then give up my bought and paid for seats because the train is busy?

How do you benefit from keeping the seats empty?
How does anyone else benefit from you keeping the seats empty?
Would you like it if you had to stand when there were empty seats?
Would you like it if someone was kind enough to let you have a seat they paid for instead of standing?

This could obviously degenerate into a completely different argument, but imo the 'whats in it for me?' attitude to life is a very sad one. Thank god the world isnt full of people like the ones on Camels train.

Basically the short version of  the point I am making is, to deny people the seats you gain nothing but make the world a little bit more miserable, by letting people have the seats you lose nothing but make the world a nicer place to be in.

You would gain the extra space from not having people sit next to you.

Did they have a lot of luggage? Because that would have been really handy space to store it if they did.

They may have had severe claustrophobia and the friends who were going to travel may have been trained counsellors who could help them cope with being bottled up on the train - not only did they have to make do without the claustrophobia trained counselling, but people also wanted to crowd in on them even more. All those people standing - clearly selfish.

I'll be round your house tomorrow because I want to see what you've bought but haven't used and I will be expecting you to let me take it home.

It's my reading of clause 40 of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf

Depends on whether 'per person' means 'per person actually on the train' or 'per person for the number of tickets bought'. I'd say the former.

pretty sure no one sits beside you on a train if you knew that without extensive googling

I would take the little reservation cards, make them into a small Millwall brick and then hurt them - at least I hope I would

I've no trouble sharing out the seats.  But if I've paid extra for them, I'm going to pick who gets the seats.  And I can promise you...it won't be the person who barks the loudest.

wow i may be a massive wanker but I'm glad my parents brought me up to not be a complete dousche towards others. I would definitely look to two people who looked like they most needed the seats and offered them at no cost.

Only circumstance I'd say no is if someone who looked like a tramp/smelt/was a weirdo came and asked.
