Lets say I am socially inept and miserable so I don't want to sit next to anyone on a train so I book out 4 seats. Why should I then give up my bought and paid for seats because the train is busy?

How do you benefit from keeping the seats empty?
How does anyone else benefit from you keeping the seats empty?
Would you like it if you had to stand when there were empty seats?
Would you like it if someone was kind enough to let you have a seat they paid for instead of standing?

This could obviously degenerate into a completely different argument, but imo the 'whats in it for me?' attitude to life is a very sad one. Thank god the world isnt full of people like the ones on Camels train.

If they paid for the seats and had the tickets rather than their friends then it's up to them what they do with it. If nobody offered to pay for the seats then i think it's fair enough. I probably wouldn't have the balls to say no to people though.

Because obv all of the  other passengers haven't paid for a seat...........

They paid to travel on the train and they weren't stopped from doing so.

the question as I see it is- have they paid for the seats? I'm pretty sure the answer is no. you pay for a train journey from a to b, the reservation entitles an individual to a seat if they turn up for the journey. if they don't turn up then the reservation is meaningless and the seat should become available

if a seat cost more than a standing place then we would have a different situation and they'd have every right to keep what was paid for but that's not how train travel works in the uk

Basically the short version of  the point I am making is, to deny people the seats you gain nothing but make the world a little bit more miserable, by letting people have the seats you lose nothing but make the world a nicer place to be in.

This whoosed me a little, are you saying that on some services people pay for standing room only and others pay for seats?

Very good point, in fact the guys standing probably paid MORE because they did so at short notice.

Tell them to GTFO - you can only reserve one seat per person. If their friends aren't on the train, they lose the seat reservation.

Are you sure about this Andrew?

They were insistent they had paid extra for the seats.

I have never reserved a seat on a train, I don't like the inflexibility of picking one train a week in advance. I just show up and hope there's a seat.

They haven't paid extra to specifically book one though have they?

Not got a problem with it, they paid for the seat so it’s there’s to do what they want

Personally I would give the seats up

Hold on.

Keith, which train company were you travelling with?

I think, but I'd have to check, that East Coast charge for seat reservations now. In which case, they HAVE paid more for the seats.
