http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/08/hm_revenue_phish/An old one, this, although I still get sent them fairly regularly. If it was just a html link, it's highly unlikely you could have caught anything nasty. Depends on what browser you are using though - there are some exploits that only require you to visit a site, although they are rare, and tend to get patched in browsers fairly quickly, so make sure you keep IE/Firefox/whatever updated. If you're getting an AV message popping up frequently, I'd be careful about what you log in to online until you fix it though - spurious AV warnings are a common tactic of malware. Can you post a screenshot of the warning?

HMRC don't deal with refunds by email so 100% it will be a fake/phishing exercise...

Well done on picking the worse week of the year to ring the tax office. If you've been on BR you'll definitely get some back, probably quite a lot of it if you've not earnt 20k+ You won't get it automatically though, you def need to ring them. Leave it 2 weeks and ring them again. If you get a proper job on a tax code they'll just take it off that. If you stay on BR you'll just get a cheque or bank tx.

In feb I was made permanent by my company so was back on br tax for a month! So I shud ring them in 2weeks or will they auto deduct it from my wages?

The company you work for for will charge you tax based on what the IR (inland revenue) tell them to do.
In some circumstances the company has to put you on a BR tax code. This is usually when you start work part way through a tax year and don't have a P45 to show how much tax you paid under your previous employment. Some part time jobs also use BR codes so that your main job work out your main tax and the part time job is separate. They get added at the year end and any refund is applied to next years tax code.
The BR code basically takes 25% of everything you earn so that the IR is always up on the deal.
You get a tax allowance of about 6k per year that you can have for free. Anything you earn above this gets taxed at different levels depending on how much it is. If the IR owes you money one way they can refund it is by increasing your allowance next year. It's all done through your tax code and is nothing to do with the company you work for. Your company can't do anything, you have to sort it yourself. They will tax you based on the last information given to them by the IR.
The best thing to do is wait until you get all of your P45s and a P60 for this tax year. Once you have them all ring the tax office and tell them you think you are eligible for a refund. They will need the info from your P60 (year end tax) from your current employer as well as any P45 info from previous employers. The IR obviously have this info anyway but if you can point them in the right direction it'll be quicker.
Don't worry about having it done before the end of the year. Your tax code can be changed at any time during next year and will balance everything out whenever it happens.
I'd definitely wait until after you get a P60 from your current employer. You won't know how much you've earnt until then so you can't give full info. Also at this time of year people are panic filling out tax returns and ringing the IR with queries. Companies are ringing the tax office as they are nearing the end of year as well. In 2 weeks companies will be submitting their end of year so it'll still be hectic.
Unless you want to wait in a queue I wouldn't ring them for about a month. It really is their busiest time. You don't have to worry about getting your money because it's very safe.

HMRC only answered 1/2 calls made to them last year, send a letter to the main tax district address to PAYE team explaining situation. If no response within 28 days write to same office address to complaints manager and hope that they follow their internal protocal on prioriitising complaints. Be aware union on overtime ban and they have shed loads of work processing at moment. Payroll/HR at work should also be chasing up as well. You can claim up to six years if they have made error so still plenty of time. All stuff will come via post or BACS no email tho'

Hope I get a cheque they prob owe me thousands!! my experience with the inland revenue is that they work from a default position of you owe them until you prove otherwise - and then they lose your form when they realise they owe you 000's, and it takes 3 years to recover and then they continue to chase you on the following years where you [ ] owe them, despite the numbers and format not being dissimilar to previous years. bunch of *****! I and dont use that word lightly!
