Didn't technically lose it. Knew right where it was...the next day. But by then some other fecker had walked with it.

If waiting for Swype is annoying you, try SlideIT Keyboard, a bit annoying getting used to it, but on the whole good
Also for free music download Music Wizard

Who needs to wait for Swype, when they have 'Voice to Text' already on their phone, out of the box?
Those who are waiting, may have a long wait... I don't believe the developers intend to make it available for download, preferring to sell it to handset manufacturers for inclusion on new phones.

Apologies to Dawn, appbrain is a must-have for anyone with an android phone imo. Does so much more than Laxie's explanation though to be fair
Anyway, here's the apps on my phone:

I've had 'Locale' installed on my phone for a while and it's pretty powerful.
But 'tasker' looks even more powerful. Allows you to get your phone to do 'things' according to the situation you're in. So for example, you can set it so when you're at home it switches the wi-fi on, disables the key-lock and turns the volume down (and off between the hours you want to sleep). It can do a lot more than that, but takes a bit of reading and playing around with to understand what you can do with it. It's a paid app £3.99 - but that's hardly going to break the bank.
There's a whole load of advice and tips about tasker on reddit:

Here's a good overview to get you started with tasker:
