Today, I feel inspired by 5000 people doing the Blenheim Triathlon. So, having given up smoking six days ago, I'm setting myself the goal of completing next years event. In order to keep up the motivation for the coming year, I will be doing it for charity.

The charity will be SSNAP - Support for the Sick Newborn And their Parents. My brother in-law and his girlfriend gave birth to a very ill little girl last December who passed away three days later. It was the people from SSNAP that supported them and their daughter while going through the most traumatic time of their lives. So I'll support them.

What I want to know is what's the best way to raise money on-line for charity?

As I have a year to do this I think I should set a lofty goal. So I'm looking to get at least £10k raised for this.

Any help in setting up website/ facebook stuff etc. would be greatfully received.

Is 10k not aiming a bit high?

Congrats on giving up smoking for 6 days. Now you have made it public you will HAVE to stick it out ;-)

I would concentrate on getting fit and just generally putting the word around. Contact local businesses (dont they get tax relief for donating to charity?) and maybe keep this thread updated on how you are doing and posting links to it wherever you can.

More important enjoy the personal challenge and what ever money you raise will be a bonus. I dont think you should set a target, just do your best..GLGLGL x

I have used the JustGiving website in the past and its really easy to use.

The tough part is getting people to split from there money, obviously plenty will.. good luck!

well done on the giving up smoking i have gave up for 5 months and 7 days after smoking for 20 years!!
it gets easier although i still crave fags all the time you need to use will power alone in my opinion none of the other things worked for me gl though
with the charity thing take your Sponsor forms to your local casino poker players can be very generous when it comes to things like this ill Sponsor you £20 on the condition you still dont smoke by the time you do the event!! good luck

Definitely set up a JustGiving page (or equivalent).  Getting people to sign a sponsorship form is easy, but then getting the money from them can be a royal pain.  So if you have the online donation option people can sponsor you instantly.  Still not the easiest thing in the world, but at least you don't have to chase them twice.

When I ran the London Marathon in 2009, I managed to raise about £1,700 (my target was about £2K).  A lot of that came from the good people of blonde who were very generous, and more generous than most other communities I'm part of (or care less about the odd £20 or £50 than most).

£10K is a big target to aim for, and without business donations you'll need a lot of publicity and a lot of hard work to get to that amount.  Depends on the sort of networks you're part of, and the number of people you know.

Good luck with it though fella, and make sure you hassle me for some money (I'll do the same when I run London again next year Wink)

A lot of athletes don't like the swim part, I'm guessing they've bowed to the pressure of making it as short as possible.

As for the £10k target - you'll need corporate sponsorship for that (unless you know some very rich people)

The length of each section is based of the 1/2 the Longest distance in Olympics in the pool, on the athletics track and the Road Time trial (around 40k)

As for the target. It's meant to be nearly impossible, a bit like giving up the fags and me training for the triathlon!!!!
