Get an ipad by all means - it does some nifty stuff.

But it's not a laptop replacement.

This, the sort of person who will be able to own/use an ipad is someone who already has a desktop and laptop imo. It's very clever and a delight to use but really what's the point! My brother and his wife both have one and they are awesome for surfing the net and reading books etc but really what's the point?!?! I don't think i'd have anything to use one for.

Nice avatar boshi!

I don't think they'd be better for reading books as I prefer, er, well actual books

I think if you're minted then it's a nice toy to add to your other gadgets but it doesn't really have any USP, it doesn't do anything that something else doesn't already do and the only thing that it does better than them is web browsing (as long as you avoid flash)

yeah exactly, I thought it was just me. I read on my screen all day long but never more than a few lines at a time, if I wanted to read a few pages of text i'd want to print it out because I hate reading off screens.

Had a play with one and they are pretty entertaining.

Pretty useless though.

I meant as a replacement to a laptop to read an ebook.  I think they'd have the edge there.

I prefer books myself too - but the capability to have several hundred books on an ipad (and the ability to download others when you want) might be useful if you're travelling, on holiday, etc., as it would reduce the bulk.

Concentrating on a screen for several hours as hard as reading small text can't be good for your eyes

I spend 12+ everyday reading small text on computer screens.  It's probably not the best idea, but my eyes are fine.

You can also adjust the font size on a laptop/ipad, so in a way it's better for you than a printed book - DUCY?

Yes ipad >>>>>>>> laptop for reading an ebook but
Because of what Sack it off suggested ebooks >>>>>> ipad for reading books,

It does save a bit of space only having the ipad, but the actual market that the ipad benefits is tiny - the rest of the demand is just for the people liking all the pretty shiny appleyness of it all

NB it's not the font size that's the problem it's the luminosity, and you really should look into the regulations concerning safe use of VDU's Kin

I think I've heard this argument before.

I think it went something like, but my grandfather smoked every day and it never did him any harm

I have a contrast button.  Works excellently.

Probably did though, didn't it?

I doubt using a computer for 12 hours+ a day will give me lung cancer - not matter what the daily mail says.

Am I correct in saying you can't use iPad to download applications any Apple product to download anything Steve Jobs doesn't approve of, or earn any money out of? I.e Utorrent, poker clients etc
FYP

Yes, and for that reason, I'm out. Speaking as someone who writes software, I hate the whole Jobsian cult with a vengeance. Yes, it's pretty, yes, the UI is very impressive, but even Microsoft is open and fair next to the Apple business model.
