Something happened to me today, a little problem and I'm wondering if it's a common thing to happen or it's just me. It's not the first time I've been in this spot and it probably won't be the last.

I was heating a micromeal, chicken korma it said on the box. It was one of those jobbies where you heat it for a few minutes, give it a shuggle, then heat it for another few minutes before plating it up.

Long story short, I'm at the microwave, it has just gone -ding- but because I've been engaged in other things, and possibly because I'm an idiot,  I have no idea whether it's shuggling time or plating time.

Most modern microwaves have digital input these days, you push buttons rather than turn dials. If the above problem is a common one, I wonder why microwave manafacturers don't bung in the facility to push a button and see the recent history of the devices use. How long it's been on for and when, a date and time stamp as it were.

You can with a mobile phone, why not your microwave?

No joke, genuine dilemma I find myself in semi frequently.

I usually err on the side of caution and zap it again. It was never going to be a culinary experience so rather overcooked than undercooked.

If I found myself faced with such a dilemma I would examine the dish for evidence of shruggling.  If korma has already been shruggled there will be some splattered on the underside of the filmy covering, and the sauce would have been upset somewhat.  If meal still looks nicely settled like it's been lying prone in your fridge for a day or two chances are the beep/ding is just an indication that it's shruggle time and dinner needs a minute or two more zappage.

I tried that Colombo CSI shit but my inspection was inconclusive.

A certain amount of incedental shuggling takes place prior to piercing the film with several times with a fork. (which we all know means stabbing the shit out of it)

The film has splatter even before the official shuggle

Henceforth dispense the need for mid-cook shuggle from your microwaving routine. Especially for curry where the texture of the food, it being mainly sauce plus chunks of meat. So turn 4 mins plus quick shake plus another 4 mins into a straight 8 mins. Relieve kitchen tension.

Why don't you buy some plastic shuggling utensils and place them in the microwave with your meal?

That way when it pings you just open the door and check the state of utensils.

If they're clean a shuggle is required.

If they're dirty it's dinner time.

Or just check to see if you still have skin on your fingers. If you have then you need to shuggle, if not it's time to eat.

As an internationally recognised expert in microwave cuisine I feel qualified to provide the solution to you shuggling dilemma.

Firstly the zapping instructions make it clear that you should pierce film lid several times, you do this with a fork of small sharp knife, you then put said culinary delight in the microwave for its initial zappage, then (and this is the key to permanant salvation from shuggling confusion) you peel back the film lid and stir instead of a mere shuggle. Thus alleviating any confusion over the zapping process, if the film lid has been peeled back then sufficient shuggling has occurred, if film lid is intact then you are left in absolutely no doubt as to the next required stage in the process.

peel back the film ffs?  most connisseurs of microwave cuisine are far too lazy to bother with all that hoo hah.  And why aren't you answering your phone? I was gonna sing to you and everything.  Maybe I just answered my own question.

You sang on the voicemail message ... I was in bed with headphones in listening to music and didn't hear the phone, which after hearing said singing made me feel quite thankful for missing the call Wink
