This is BS. I'm sure Shearer regrets deep down not going to United.

Do you think 'good lookin' Gary Neville would have chosen Utd or Chelsea in the same spot? Easy right. Had he ended up with no trophies do you think he'd have regretted his choice to go to Utd?

Didn't Gerrard support Everton has a boy? And Carragher?

Shearer still won the title. I know it's only once but he had the medal. He knew he was good enough to win the league but would rather have tried to do it with his home club than move just because he'd win more medals.
Didn't Gerrard says "it's alright winning medals but when you go home who are you going to show them to?"

Same Gerrard who almost left Liverpool twice?
That's the one. Offered more money and more medals and didn't go.

So it's abso nothing to do with the fact that Liverpool had chances to win things? He stayed because they were competitive not just because he loves the club.

If he didn't believe he could win things with Liverpool he would be pulling the Blue jersey on as we speak

Probably best you stick to manu players, rather than get things wrong about Gerrard.

Lost this thread a bit.

Gerrard not leaving Liverpool is somehow related to Shearer preferring NUFC to MUFC.

Another Q for Utd fans... When you won the CL in 08 Ronaldo wanted out to the shambolic Real Madrid. Does this resonate a bit more with regards to a player going to a club he loves over one where he can win more? (based on 08 as I expect Real to win everything in the near future)

Think my point has been lost:

1) I'm not saying Shearer wakes up every morning with a pang of regret- looking the mirror crying because he didn't join United. However I would imagine when you look back on a career with one significant medal to your name it must make you wonder

2) I AM saying that surely the best footballers want to win things. I'm sure there's the odd Scunthorpe fan playing in the prem- does that mean they'd drop down to join them in the prime of their career?

3) If Ronaldo had supported FC Porto as a child I very much doubt he would be playing there today even if they could afford him. He's gone to Real because he primarily believe he CAN win things with them

4) Gerrard would be pulling on a Chelsea strip right now again if he didn't believe his beloved home town club couldn't be competitve

All sounds fair enough to me.

My point was the most loyal players will sacrifice a level of competitiveness (say maybe a few trophies and the odd league title challenge) to play at a place they really love.

ie, Ronaldo, Shearer etc.

The only reason Gerrard won't leave Liverpool, is because no clubs that are challenging for the titles in Spain, England, and Italy don't want him ,and would cost to much for a player who is 30.

He didn't stay for the reason you stated.

He used to watch Liverpool play from the Kop when he was a kid.

I was right about Carragher tho? He was a bluenose and now plays for their arch rivals?

Why did Gerrard stay then?

Basically, you're guesing. IF he'd said he wanted to go this summer he'd be allowed to. It's now more to do with his wife and kids being at home than about anything football related.

Most of the famous Utd youth team that dominated the 90's were players pinched from acadamies around the country. I don't get your point?
