Do you use bankroll management?

How do you work out what games you're rolled for or do you just jump into whatever you fancy regardless of level?

How would you advise a new player to manage their bankroll to ride the roller coaster that is variance?

Really depends what your wanting to play,if its NLHE cash then 30bi is minimum but plo it'll be a lot more.45mans are what I know and the minimum for that is 100bi but 180 mans you want 150-200 bi's.As for mtt's,a lot.

To answer the question do I use it? Well I am not sure many recreational player have a "bankroll" in the true sense of the word. I have money set aside which I call my "bankroll" it even sits in a different bank account to my "real" money and my online accounts are linked to that bank account not my main account. However if I lost it all I would probably just reload it with a small amount and start again. The levels I play at don't involve life changing money.

I am assuming you are able to beat the game, as if you can't bankroll management will only slow down how long it takes to lose the money.

I would say in online NLHE cash games (which is by far the majority of my game) you want, as Monda said, at least 30BI, in fact I would say you want more if you are multi-tabling. If you play badly in a session which does happen your liability is greater and it is much easier to play badly and lose money than play well and win it back. I play between 6 and 10 tables and have nearly 70 buyins in my Pokerstars account, although I am not really trying to move up and am a nit, 50 BI is probably enough. Omaha you definatley need more but I don't know how many, probably 50% more? So 45 for playing 1 or 2 tables and 75 for multi-tabling? Maybe that is taking it too far but the idea of a bankroll is not to go broke.

Live cash games you can PROBABLY get away with 20. A 50p/£1 live game at most casinos in the country plays much softer than a 10c/25c game on Pokerstars or Full Tilt, and you can only play one table.

I am completely happy at the levels I play at and have no plans to play any bigger but if I was looking to move up I would want the min number of buyins at the next level plus another five as a safety zone for playing online.

Live I would probably be happy with 20 BI at the next level and would move back down if I dropped to 15.

That all sounds really boring and complicated but would be really important for a pro player. If you are just playing low stakes for a bit of fun I really would not worry about it as long as you ARE playing within your means, and again if you are not then bankroll management is unlikely to help you. For some people they like the challenge of building it up so if thats the case I suppose you should stick to it as well.

If you are asking about tournaments I am not experienced enough or good enough to say really. I have never been sure you can really expect to make a long term profit on multi-table tournaments and have always seen them as a bit of fun. However other players results prove differently.

Technically speaking, and this is like the "guidline" thats been refered to in strategy writing you should have...

80buyins NLHE cash
100-120 buyins PLO cash
Tourneys anything from 200+ (i.e. you should have a min $5k roll to play $26's on ftp.....)

BUT having said this, the best way to move up limits is to have a nice lil bankroll boost, i.e take a couple of shots!

If you think there is a game and you;d be +EV in it, or you feel espcially good or w/e reason if its +EV then jump in, if it means you'd have 70 buyins instead of the required 80 for your reg stake if it went wrong who cares, just grind it back!

I've happily taken shots online with 15-25 buyins for a stake, and live with like 5, often it fails so be ready for that its pretty crushing.....

Everyone uses bankroll management, but some use it really really badly.
