OK so its a Saturday evening and I'm packing my kit to go on exercise.  I spent the best part of the morning just staring at my kit and then slowly got things together throughout the afternoon. Real pain in the @rse, as for the last 12 months or so everything has been configured for desert conditions, whereas I'm now looking at a couple of weeks in the pissy wind and rain of Germany...

My evening is being spent taping things together, ensuring things fit snuggly, everything is silent when shaken and everything is serviceable. The worst part has been cleaning my camelbak (fiddly). Its not been cleaned for 2 years through lack of a cleaning kit, so I'm kinda horrified to see some of what I could have been ingesting with my 'clean' water :-(

There is equipment and clothing strewn across my room, it looks like a bomb site. I have to get all this cr*p into a bergan. A bergan I'll most likely to be humping about for the majority of the time...

But still a feeling of procrastination persists, resulting in me playing poker and posting on here. The exercise will involve a range firing week culminating in the Combat Marksmanship Test; build up to Close Quarters Battle and OBUA (used to be FIBUA - Fighting in Built Up Area's i.e. room clearing etc). There will then be a bog standard week out in the field with all the normal patrols, OP's etc

Now if I offered this to some young Call of Duty dude I'm sure they'd have my hand off, but I still cannot be bothered with it. The main reason...

MOSQUITO's. I hate Mozzi's and they love me. More specifically they like biting me a drinking my blood. But for some reason this year there seems to be alot of the little buggers - and where we are going is Mosquito Central :-(

I know I'm lucky to have a job, as there are quite a few out there that don't have one. This has got to be one of the sh*ttiest parts of my job. That and the fact I live miles from my kids. But that got me to thinking, I know others certainly have to do a lot worse things, and being a bit of a community Blonde must be quite a diverse lot - therefore it would be interesting to know what everyone does for a living - and the sh*ttiest thing they have to do or the worst impacts of the job on their lives...

It's like the dark ages where I work you should think yourself lucky:

I have to walk at least 20 yards to the kitchen and I have to make my own tea sometimes!!!

FFS Lee,

think of the proper soldiers (infantry) who have to do this on a weekly basis - lol you whinge about your once a year battlecamp/range week.

Stop being a pussy.

To answer your question, for me it's going in most days, civvies are atrocious at management, think no-one but them are important and have so many rules/regulations it's not even slightly funny. They call them "controls" where I work which is probably the correct term as we are micro-managed to fuck.

Think yourself lucky, shut down the PC and get yer gear packed.

Know what you mean mate, I've only been finished 10 years and the changes in kit are mind boggling.

Be safe bud.

The worst part of my job without doubt is having to make people redundant.

Doesn't matter how many times you do it it never gets any easier.

Making a family man redundant just before Christmas sucks really hard and makes me feel shit for weeks.

I can relate to that..owning your own firm is a thankless task at the best of times..but when people are relying on you for their livelihood and you have to let them go ..its the worst..
First person i ever had to lay off was a real old boy.. I felt dreadful.. last person was a woman who started crying... sigh thats a big bite of a shit sandwich right there

Delegate your redundancies!

31st January and 31st August are by far the crappiest parts of my job.

Worst part of my job is when pissed people (who wants to just be nice and make a bit of small talk) say something that is an unintentional huge rubdown, ie

"so is this your like your full time job then?"
