Seriously are there any staked players who aren't in a ton of make up? surely most of these staking deals wouldn't go on if people weren't mates.

The main point to remember is being in MU does not mean that a) the backer isn't in profit of you, or b) you're a loosing player, if you're in $50k MU then all that means is since I last made profit I've lost $50k, could have made $500k prior to that
It's a business that is high in risk if a) you're not comfortably rolled for the venture (and it's always more than you think) or b) you're unsure if the horse is +EV. If you're confident that the player is +EV and can support them financially then it's a pretty lucrative, low risk exercise.
This isn't to say ofc ur point isn't kinda valid and people sometimes stake people in games, not 100% convinced they are +EV but more as a favour for their mates, thats not great business, but then it prolly doesn;t need to be

I can think of a couple of people in the UK who've done very nicely from staking people
