In fairness she doesn't get an awful lot of coverage over here. If you haven't been exposed to much daytime television its not really that surprising that you havent heard of her.
Have you heard of Pop Tarts?

Ricki Lake was huge! literally.. it just sounds like you missed out on a lot of daytime tv, which is probs not a bad thing though. GO JERRY, GO JERRY.

If anything I'd say that Alex's knowledge and appreciation of classical music would put him solidly in the bottom 10% of accurate representative of the population 20-something's in relation to mainstream musical knowledge.
I think it largely depends on what your parents and your friendship groups in school were like. When I was a kid there was music on all the time at home, far more often than the TV was on. The first music I ever listened to was the likes of The Eurythmics, Simply Red, The Police, The Jam, Squeeze etc.
At school I was in the more indie crowd so took a keen interest in the genre, and the indie/rock scene still idolises its founding fathers, so I spent most of the ages of 15-18 listening to 70s/80s/90s bands because those were the people that the bands I was into at the time were influenced by.
Pretty jealous that you haven't heard of Cream though Alex. You're in for a treat.
Thanks Dan. I feel even older now.

Talking of people being more selective and having more choice in terms of what they watch and listen to, here's a fact from QI that's well, quite interesting:
In 1995, the number of TV programmes in Britain watched by over 15 million people was 225. By 2004, this had fallen to 6.

yup, no daytime TV at all. when did you kids have time for that? I never skipped school or anything. And in the holidays, did other stuff. Drugs sex and rock and roll mainly. And Brahms.

IIRC that bowie and bing clip was just a week or two before the latter died. Pretty much the last musical thing he did and just glorious.

Cream was a band in which probably the best known member was Eric Clapton.

Have you never heard or sang " White Christmas " by Bing Crosby? It happens to be the best selling single of all time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Christmas_%28song%29
