New to poker, is pub poker a good way of learning?

Hi there, I'm new to Plymouth in Devon and I want to go out there and play poker in the pub so I can meet people but I don't know which is the best one to join? Any help would be cool. Does anyone play in any that they'd recommend? I'm new to poker too so thought this would be a good way to learn the game as I won't be losing any money straight off! And finally, is it a good way of learning the game?
Cheers guys.

You say that you dont want to lose money but in the grovesnor on a friday night they have a £10 freezeout that gets about 60 runners this would be your best bet to be honest, the standard in pub poker is crazy apart from the few that win the leagues every time.

To get a feel for the game and if you haven't played much before, I would start on the freerolls just to learn the basics ( hands etc )
The pub game is ok for a bit of a laugh but you can't play serious as you will always be called by stupid hands that win and to play better you have to play against better players i think,
If you can afford it some small stake tourneys at the casinos are a good start as suggested,
In the end only play at the levels that you are confortable with !!
Good Luck

you will learn nothing useful in a pub that you couldnt learn 18 million times faster playing free rolls on line - and you will save yourself from pub players
then when you have the basics - play a small game at a local casino to get used to live play

Not sure playing freerolls online is a good way of meeting people though!

Find a casino with a £10 or £20 freezeout. Just state that you're new to the game and most people will help you out.
Pub games can be fun - but it won't really teach you much about poker.

Pretty much that
Depends what your motivation is
If it is a social motivation, meet new friends, have a chat, the odd game of cards then Pub Poker
If you want to play better poker, in a licenced environment (ie safe, regulated, often with dealers etc) then small casino competitions
As has been said the Plymouth Grosvenor and places like the Torquay Mint near you are ideal in that respect. Nothing to say you won't meet new mates there either

Thanks guys, that's great. I guess the main aspect for me at the minute is meeting people and having fun. I'm never going to be the world's best poker player so thought the pub leagues would be good for me.
I have posted on another forum too, and they suggested the Redtooth leagues or Poker in the Pub. Do any of you have experience of these leagues? If so, which one do you feel is the best to join people-wise, prize-wise and standard-wise?
Thanks for all your replies so far, I really appreciate all your advice.

hi
i think you need to separate 2 things here:
social
learning
you will def have a MUCH better social time with the pub stuff - but you will not learn how to play well. You will learn hand rankings etc and that 2 overs vs a pair is a flip, but you will hear so much BS at the tables it will be difficult to pick the good from the bad
so if its social - play the pub leagues, if you are really wanting to learn - swerve the pub leagues. TBF it sounds like you want the social side and to that end I cant knock it.
