Days 67 and 68 - (Sounds about right)

I've been fiddling manically with com-poo-tah and I think it's more broke now than it was a couple of days ago. Dual monitoring has become a complete no-no. If I have them both running, it offends the computer to the point of it crashing in protest.

Very annoyed with the whole thing and have decided just to leave it till I can get Delll-Dell to fix-fix it for me. If I continue my repair attempts, I'll just get frustrated to the point whereby I might piss away money.

Played in the early evening again, ended up down around $500. Decided to not play anymore at that time (before midnight) as I'm feeling much less invincible about doing so. (Might still have the odd afternoon sesh and see how it goes)

Using just one monitor, four tabling was annoying me. The other monitor is sitting right next to me, mocking me, as if to say, you should be playing six big boy.

"Six six six, all the cool kids play six six six" she whispered enticingly.

So six I played, with a little bit of ovelap. That pissed me off too, having played with no overlap, it didn't feel right.

Then something inside me decided to go for a gay skip in the meadow. Seeing as I'm playing with overlaping screens anyway, why not play 10? The last 60 I played were 10 at a time. I broke roughly even (just getting used to it is my excuse)
I need to speak aloud to myself to keep the focus. That helps me loads, I live by myself so no-one is going to have me locked away for being a loon.

Day 67 and 68 Results :
-$308.5 (+$9,489 total)
ROI : 8.6% (after 1,678 tournaments)

Pisch ROI, oh dear. At least I've put 168 more tournamentals in the bag.

I'm very aware that I'm still a while away from 2,000 tournamentals (that'll be halfway fergus  Cheesy) and time is slipping by quite quickly indeed.

To that end, I'll try 10-tabling again in my next sesh. Very tentativily though, if it starts to flump up in my face, I'll cut down to 4 or 6 at a time. I may have to turn the classic rock volume up so I can't hear the shrill hollow whispers of the temptress that is my second monitor.

Were you using Ultramon with the new monitors?  Its a utility for multi-screen setups and, if not, it might be worth downloading and seeing if there's any difference (assuming that you haven't already confirmed that its a hardware issue with the monitor itself).

Just a thought.  Probably won't make a difference but maybe worth a try (initial trial version of Ultramon is free).

Days 69 and 70 - Friday, as always, was my day off. No poker played, not on the internet anyway. I decided that moving up to 10-tables was probably a bad plan right now. Increasing the number of tables you play at one time is basically stepping up to play a higher limit. You should never step up after a losing session.

On Day 70 I mucked around with a few WSOP satellites. Playing the $5 rebuys, $15 double shootouts and the $30 rebuy into the main event.

Very upset with myself, managed to make it all the way to the final table of a WSOP satellite (the $30 rebuy) with a decent chip lead. 3 seats were being awarded. I donked away my chip advantage and finished in 5th.

We've all been there, you'll know well meaning consolatory congratulations for making it that far and the $700 (ish) booby prize come as litle comfort. I know that I played "controversially" and will have to live with that. It would have been fantastic to qualify for the WSOP in the first satellite I played, it wasn't to be.

A reminder of why I play STT. A 4th place in a sit n go will not affect my mood, nor will 10 of them, or 20 for that matter. Can't quite match the dejection and agony of being within a hair breadth of a $12,000 WSOP package and blowing it. Anyone who can just shrug that off is a better man than me.

What I'm most annoyed about is not coming so close, nor is it that I could have played differently on the final table, it is the way that I'm handling it that is getting to me.
I'm upset at my being upset, if that makes any sense.
I used to pride myself on being able to keep my cool with internet poker and possesing a certain ability to emotionally distance myself from my results. I can't yet do that in multi-table tournaments, especially satellites. My 5th yesterday was a stark reminder that poker is a tough game, and to play it well, to keep my focus at crucial moments, I have a long way to go. Hats off to anyone who plays MTT for a living, I hope to one day, but need to engineer a great deal more mental strength for myself before I do.

At least the 36 regular STTs I played went well.

Days 69 and 70 Results : +$1,008 (+$10,497 total)
ROI : 9.3% (after 1,723 tournaments)

So I should be happy, I've finally got that comma I've been looking for. I should be happy.......

I'm going to work my WSOP qualification campaign from a seperate bankroll. So any satellites will not be included in the above ROI% calculations, it is just for cash tournaments (I've decided)
I've plenty W$ (money that can only be used for WSOP satellites) as I had a good day at the smaller satellites (which are very soft). I should be able to build from that and not need to nip into my main roll. (The $10,497 figure is exclusively the STT proceeds.)

Day 70 Supplemental - I went for a walk, got my feet a bit soggy in the snow, but I feel much better now. A long stroll usually helps me put things into perspective.

I'm going to play a lot of satellites in my poker career, I'll win some and lose some. This will happen again, the so near but so far syndrome. Next time I'll be able to handle it better. I'm putting what happened yesterday down to experience.

I'm sorry for the above self indulgent, feeling sorry for myself, entry to this thread. Usually I try to avoid that sort of thing.

I'm getting back to the tables tonight and will, as always, let you know how it goes.   Cool

Tank.
I was watching Planet Earth on BBC 1 last night and a short item on it reminded me of your present situation.

It concerned the Himalayan Snow Leopard. A shy and elusive creature that lives around 4000m
up in the mountains.
Anyway, up in the Himalaya's pickings are slim. The BBC had tracked down two leopards a mother
and her cub. Both fighting for survival. The piece started with the touching scene of the mother
lovingly cleaning her cub before she started to hunt. Before long the leopard places her cub in their
den and heads off into the snowy gloom.

Then, across the slopes she spots her prey. A group of deer type thingy's(never caught their name)
and the leopards instincts kick in. For hours she tracks them, keeping out of sight,up the hill, down the
hill, strategising ( is this a word ?), plotting ,waiting, using her years of experience and know how. She's
waiting for the right time , the spot, the place where she can go in for the kill.
Eventually, she finds it, a damp area where she can get above them and use the high ground and where
the dampness means they cannot hear her coming. Purrfect..
This is it.. the hours.. the patience...the scheming..the planning....this is it..you can see it on her face( see Mike
Caro's book of Snow Leopard tells)......She pounces!!!....

Deer type thingy's scatter off on all directions . The Snow leopard  goes after one. Down and down the mountain
they go. Hunted followed by the hunter.  They look like Slalom skiers at the Olympics. The Leopards got it..No..it's away.
Then after a long chase the lepoards catches up with the deer. Jaws around the hind leg. 'This is it' says the leopard to
itself  ( a  leopard talking out loud would just be ridiculous) 'Dinner time for me and the bairn' ...but no.. the deer
twists one final time breaks free and jumps in a river. End of chase..The leopard stares after its prey..dejected, in disbelief,
in astonishment.. how could it spend so much time ,have its prey in  its grasp, and lose it all at the final moment.

You could almost see the feeling of failure in the lepoard as it trudged back to its den and her cub. The cub stuck his head
out of the den on her mothers approach. You could almost here him whisper' Anything to eat today mum?'...
'No ... son.' says the leopard...' a bad beat..no luck TODAY'

Moral of the story (apart from I watch to much TV) is tomorrow is another day Tank.. and you only have to get lucky once.

Good luck    Grin Grin Wink

Great Thread!

You are proving that goal setting with a realistic target is a great motivator (and that you can play well enough to achieve it). Good luck in the WSOP hunt and make sure you celebrate well when you finally hit the 4000.

Tank.

Great to reads that you've hit no major blips and that things are running well.

I've recently been considering playing STTs.

2 questions:

Do you play shorthanded STTs?

How many hours is a standard day of STT playing? [I fancy giving them a crack, but am not overly keen on spending the whole day on them]

-- apologies if these questions have been covered recently --

Answering questions is getting easier now, I can just refer back to earlier writings in the thread. Not a dig at whoever asks the question that has been answered earlier, it is a big thread after all. No aplogires necessary Snoopy.

Do you play shorthanded STTs?

Day 58 - The second tournament I entered was a $110+9 six-seater. Registering for it was an accident. Never mind, I thought, will try to make the best of it.

I was shocked by some appaling play. A couple of players threw their chips at me and I ended up winning it. This made me think I'd been wasting my life playing 9-man STTs. The six-way action looked lucrative to say the least.

I played another four, walking away with a couple of 2nd places. With 2/3 fish in them, there is oodles of value in these things.

The problem, as I was soon to discover, is that with 2/3 fellow shark at the table, there is no value whatsoever. Multi-tabling, I might have even been -EV (shockeroonie). From the following eight I attempted, I only harvested myself one lonely cash, and even that was a piddily 2nd place.

No more six-seaters for me thankyou, I'll stick to what I know.

How many hours is a standard day of STT playing?

As many as you like, I try to put in 8, but that's because I play them pretty much exclusively.

Playing for 8 hours I can get in 60 turbos playing 6 at a time. At roughly 10% ROI that's averaging $300-$400 a day. (When I manage to play that many  )   Cheesy

In the future I might play them for 2/3 hours a day and play MTTs or cash games aswell.

I suppose it would also depend on what type of STT you play, the Turbos last under an hour, ones with "better" structures last nearer two hours. (but your ROI would/should be bigger)
