2011 World Series of Poker
Event #20: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Jason Somerville Wins $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em ($493,091)

What started with 3,175 players is now just one. Jason Somerville was our Day 2 chip leader and he waded through a crazy day of play to take down the bracelet in fine fashion. We started today with 27 players and within 40 minutes we had already set a final two tables. Within three hours we were down to an action final table that saw a multitude of chip leaders, double-up after double-up, and eventually just Somerville with the bracelet. He won a few key hands late to regain the chip lead and ride it to victory, including this giant all in flip against Yashar Darian when they were playing four handed.

Richard Fridvalszki raised to 140,000 under-the-gun, Yashar Darian re-raised it to 500,000 on the button and Jason Somerville re-raised all in for 2,500,000. Yashar called with {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and Somerville showed {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}.

The flop came {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} to give Somerville a full house. The turn was the {Q-Clubs} and Darian was still drawing to an ace or a king. The river was the {5-Clubs} and Somerville doubled up to 5,100,000 and had over half the chips in play. Darian fell to only 1,500,000 after the hand

Somerville has previously finished fifth, fourth, third, and second in WSOP events, but finally completed the wheel with a win today (maybe it was because his good friend Daniel Negreanu was on the rail the whole time).

1    Jason Somerville       493,091
2    Yashar Darian       305,009
3    Travis Atkins       215,855

Event #24: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

Day One Bagged; 40 Players Remain

Another day inside the halls of the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino has been wrapped up with Day 1 of Event #24: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout of the 2011 World Series of Poker coming to a conclusion.

387 players were spread over forty tables today which bested last year's number of 358 as everyone eyed the $436,568 first prize - which surprisingly sat a few thousand short of the amount Joshua Tieman collected when he snagged his first bracelet.

Unfortunately for Tieman, there would be no back-to-back run as he was bundled out late in the day. However it wasn't just because it wasn't Tieman's day, but his starting table - along with every other one - was littered with notable poker professionals, online giants and tournament veterans, making this one of the toughest fields assembled so far this World Series.

Only forty players managed to best their table to ensure not only a $13,368 payday but also a chance of collecting a WSOP final table appearance and a potential six-figure payday and gold coveted bracelet. Waving the flag for USA includes Erik Seidel, Gavin Smith, Tommy Vedes, Dan Smith, Jordan "Jymaster11" Young, Justin Bonomo, Tom Marchese and recent bracelet winner Sean Getzwiller. However the Brits are still putting on a strong showing here as James Akenhead, JP Kelly, James Dempsey and Tony Lewis are still about as well as other internationals Maxim Lykov and Darren Kramer.

Tomorrow will see the remaining players play down to a final table of ten,

Event #25: $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better

That's a Wrap - Violette & Novick Share the Honors!

Lock this one away, ladies and gents – Day 1 of WSOP Event #25 is in the books!

It was a step back in time for many of the 606 players who ponied up the $1,500 for today’s event, with plenty of WSOP bracelet winners, including Men Nguyen, Mike Sexton, Scotty Nguyen, Mel Judah, David Slansky and Tom Schneider.

However, there were just as many from the online generation to have taken their seats today, including reigning WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel, Jon Turner and Sean Nguyen. The old school did manage to teach the young’uns a thing or two and at the end of the night, we've got ourselves a two-way tie for the chip lead, with Cyndy Violette and Hevan Novick each holding 43,400! They're followed closely by Michael Sigel (41,500), Tom Dwan (35,500), Norman Chad (35,400), 2010 WSOP Player of the Year Frank Kassela (32,100) and Mike Sexton (27,100).

In all, 172 players will be returning tomorrow, but those who won’t be joining us include Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu and Chad Brown, as well as David Benyamine, Allen “The Chainsaw” Kessler, Todd Brunson, Ted Forrest, Bill Chen and Huck Seed.

I have a suspicion that in the UK that puff wouldn't get past the ASA...

Congratulations to Elie Payan, Winner of Event #22 ($292,825)!

Elie Payan from France has earned himself victory in Event #22: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha and a whopping $292,825 in cash. Not only that, Payan now has a World Series of Poker gold bracelet wrapped around his wrist -- the most coveted prize in poker!

When the day began, Payan was right in the middle of the pack, but he was a little late to the party. Payan missed the entire first orbit of play before he showed up to the final table and played his first hand. That didn't matter though, as he was the last man standing on the felt with all the chips in front of him.

Payan defeated Rafe Kibrit heads up, but it wasn't easy. The two battled back and forth, swapping the lead a couple times. At first, Payan held the chip lead heading into heads-up play, but then Kibrit fought back to take pole position in the match. Payan never gave up though and fought his way back in front and then steadily applied the necessary pressure in order to finish off his opponent.

Final Table Payouts
Place   Players   Prize
1   Elie Payan   $292,825
2   Rafe Kibrit   $181,222
3   David Sands   $113,383
4   Juha Vilkki   $82,297
5   Stephen Wolfe   $60,754
6   Emil Patel   $45,554
7   Cody Munger   $34,642
8   Jeff Sarwer   $26,704
9   Roland Israelashvili   $20,863

Congratulations to Elie Payan, the latest gold bracelet winner at the 2011 WSOP
