2011 World Series of Poker
Event #28: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em

Day 1 of Event #28 is in the Books

Another overwhelmingly large group of poker players gathered in the Rio this afternoon to kick off our second standard format $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Event of the 2011 World Series of Poker. There were 2,500 registrants and after 10 levels of play, we are down to just 349.

As usual, we had no shortage of poker talent on Day 1. Liv Boeree, Galen Hall, Michael Mizrachi, Justin Young, Tony Dunst, Jonathan Duhamel, Freddy Deeb, Phil Laak, and Eric Baldwin were just some of the players that entered the event unable to see action on Day 2. Even Bruce Buffer, the well-known UFC announcer, held a chip lead for the first few hours before slowly losing it to his opponents throughout the course of the day.

Not all of our notable pro's fell through though. Among those left are Amnon Filippi, Drazen Ilich, Andy Frakenberger, Matt Affleck, David Pham, and Peter Feldman. All of them have plenty of experience battling their way through "moving day" and the action should be furious as they try to set themselves up for glory on Day 3.

However, all of them will be chasing our front-runner, Rick Romine. About halfway through the day, whispers of an enormous stack were being heard throughout the room. When our highest notable player in our chip counts had just 40,000, Romine had already crossed the 100,000 mark... easily. And he didn't stop there. Hand after hand he continued his rush and ended the day with a whopping 176,100 in chips. For most people, Day 2 is will be stressful as the money bubble comes and goes and people start playing for the cash. But with Romine's amazing Day 1, the first few hours will be all about maintaining his stack.

1    Rick Romine    143,000
2    James English    88,000
3    Georg Jalkotzy    82,000
4    Martin Kabrhel    78,000
5    Ty Reiman    76,000
6    Kyle Carlston    75,000
7    Michael Katz    68,000
8    Matt Graham    67,000
9    Jia Liu    64,000
10    Brent Hanks    60,000

Event #29: $2,500 10-Game Mix / Six Handed
Day 1 completed

Greg Raymer finds himself near the top after Day 1

The inaugural ten-game event at the WSOP is one day old, and it's already proven to be quite the success. An impressive 431 players turned up, making this -- we're assuming but fairly confident here -- the largest ten-game tournament in the world with a prize pool just shy of $1 million.

Spread the games the fish like to play and you're sure to attract the sharks, and we had no shortage of sharp-toothed poker players here today. World Champs? Had those. Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, and John Juanda all played and survived, while Scotty Nguyen came and went rather quickly this afternoon. Math whizzes? How about Bill Chen and David Sklansky at the same table to start the day. Bracelet winners? By the bunches. Just to name a few, Steve Billirakis, John Kabbaj, Jeff Lisandro, Greg Mueller, Dutch Boyd, Erick Lindgren, Jason Mercier, and Frank Kassela all played. A few 2011 bracelet winners like Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Eugene Katchalov were here, too. John Monnette, who won his first bracelet about fifteen hours prior to the start of this event, was also in the field, but his day was a short one. Even a few of the old guard like Sam Grizzle and Mickey Appleman showed up to play this new event.

When the chip bags came out after eight levels, there was a clog at the top of the chip counts. For now, it looks like Rob Hollink's 49,100 chips are good enough to give him the overnight lead, though a few tables were playing big pots right as the night ended. Also in the mix of leaders are Brandon Adams (39,975), Grizzle (40,100), Jordan Morgan (39,000), and Jean-Robert Bellande (38,475).

Only about 168 players survived this brisk opening day

Top Chip Counts
1    Rob Hollink    49,100
2    Brandon Adams    47,325
3    Sam Grizzle    40,100
4    Greg Raymer    40,000
5    Jordan Morgan    39,000
6    Stuart Rutter    38,500
7    Jean-Robert Bellande    38,475
8    John D'Agostino    35,400
9    Chris Bjorin    34,500
10    Shaun Deeb    34,000

Event #26: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em / Six Handed

Congratulations to Oleksii Kovalchuk, Winner of Event #26 ($689,739)

After three days of action Oleksii Kovalchuk won the gold bracelet in the $2,500 Six Handed No Limit Hold’em event. He bested a field of 1,378 players and takes home $689,739 after defeating Ionel Anton heads up.
At the start of heads up play the two exchanged the chip lead several times. They were fast and loose with their action until Kovalchuk opened up a chiplead that Anton couldn’t overcome. The final hand Kovalchuk had pocket sevens against a weak ace that Kovalchuk turned into a full house.

Day 3 began with 22 players returning to action. Players falling short of the final table were Will Failla, Antony Lellouche and Sam Grafton.

Chris Moorman exited in 3rd place after Kovalchuk’s straight draw got there on the river.

Dan O’Brien was knocked out in 4th place after he paired his king on the flop but Kovalchuk made a flush on the turn.

Mazin Khoury was eliminated in 5th place when he ran his {A-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} into Anton’s pocket aces.

Anthony Ruberto was the first victim of the final table. He took a huge bad beat that crippled his stack and shook the Amazon Room from the crowd reaction. He was in a pot with Kovalchuk and all in on the turn. Ruberto had a set of jacks and Kovalchuk had a set of fours, and then spiked the one-outer on the river making quad fours. Ruberto was eliminated shortly after.
