2011 World Series of Poker
Event #36: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em

Day 1 of the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em is in the books and Marvin Rettenmaier is your chipleader with 174,100. The day began with 1,734 players and the field has been whittled down to 296 runners. Joining Rettenmaier at the top of the leaderboard are Dan O’Brien, Jack Ellwood and Brian Phelps.

Also moving on to Day 2 are notables Dwyte Pilgrim, Martins Adeniya, Gavin Smith, Randy Dorfman, Eric Baldwin, Matt Marafioti, Lars Bonding, Leo Wolpert, J.C. Tran, Tim Phan, Nam Le, Randal Flowers and Terrence Chan.

One of the most interesting hands of the day occurred when Tommy Vedes shoved on the button, not expecting a call, with only one card. After the call was made Vedes asked the dealer for another card. The floorman was summoned and the ruling was that since Vedes was on the button the top card obviously belonged to him.
Vedes only held the {Q-Clubs} and the dealer peeled off the top card and it was the {A-Clubs}. He was up against {A-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} and won the hand after pairing his queen.

Plenty of notables were sent to the rail including: Andy Frankenberger, Dan Fleyshman, Nenad Medic, Jordan Young, Liv Boeree, Jason DeWitt, Nick Binger, Jonathan Duhamel, Isaac Haxton, Sorel Mizzi and Matt Stout.

Tom Dwan was in the tournament today, albeit for just one hand. Dwan played the first hand after the dinner break after his stack had been blinded off down to just over 4,000. He shoved on the button with {7-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds}, got called by a player with {K-Clubs} {9-Clubs} and the board gave his opponent two pair. Dwan literally never took his seat, he played his one hand in what Eric Baldwin called a “runner’s stance.”

ESPN

As play concluded early Wednesday morning, 34 bracelets have been awarded at the 2011 World Series of Poker. With the passing of the halfway point, the WSOP sent out some stats regarding the composition of the players its seen through the first 29 events this summer.

To start off with the big picture of its scope, there have been 29,421 participants in the first 29 events that have created prize pools totaling $52,506,260. The average age of a WSOP participant so far has been 36 and the average age of the winners is 28. Players have come from 74 counties around the world and 62 of those countries have players who can boast a WSOP cash.

Given the worldwide appeal, it's impressive to see the masses flock to Las Vegas to participate, but only six countries are represented by 2011 bracelet winners. The most successful country thus far has been the United States, which has had 23 champions and 3,298 cashes by all players that total more than $48 million in prize money. Canada ranks second with four bracelets and 238 cashes ($4.6 million in prize money), then comes the United Kingdom (three bracelet winners and 121 cashes for $4.0 million in prize money), France (two bracelet winners and 59 cashes for $1.2 million in prize money), and Russian and the Ukraine who are each represented one WSOP champion.

Men represent 96.8 percent of all entries and one man, Tom Dwan, has entered 26 of the first 29 events to lead the WSOP in that category. The ability to play those events doesn't usually shout success and Dwan has only cashed twice so far in the $25,000 heads-up event and Event 35, $5,000 pot-limit Omaha. Two players are tied at five cashes apiece, Shaun Deeb and Kirill Rabtsov, and 14 players are tied behind those two with four cashes. The honor of winning the most money in the first 29 events belongs to Event 4 champ Allen Bari who edged out Event 2 champ Jake Cody by $27,402. The most successful woman is Maria Ho who finished behind Bari in Event 4 to capture the $540,020 second-place prize. She has entered 12 events.

The second half of the WSOP includes five $10,000 buy-in events (including the main event) as well as the $50,000 Player's Championship. The most successful players in those events will most likely jump to the top of the earnings list. There are also four $5,000 buy-in events which, as evidenced by Bari in Event 4, can produce huge prize pools.

After another hectic start to the week, only three events are resuming their progress on Wednesday, most notably the $5,000 six-handed pot-limit Omaha event which features a spectacular field as it enters its final day.

Event 35: Six-handed pot-limit Omaha

Only 15 players remain in this wildly aggressive event and Greg Brooks, formerly retired Mike McDonald, Jason Mercier, David "Devilfish" Ulliott, Chris Moorman, Peter Jetten, and Daniel Fuhs.

This is Chiu's, Mercier's and Moorman's fourth cash of the 2011 WSOP. Both Mercier and Moorman have made final tables already, but both also fell short. The spotlight will probably be on the third-place McDonald who is making his first career WSOP cash after winning $2.7 million across Europe over the past three years.

Play will continue at 5:30 p.m. ET and a champion will most likely be crowned early Thursday morning and win $619,575.

Event 36: $2,500 no-limit hold 'em

The first no-limit hold 'em tournament of the week attracted another big turnout, as a field of 1,734 players dwindled to 308 players after Day 1 of Event 36. Marvin Rettenmaier will enter Day 2 as the chip leader, but unlike many events at the WSOP, the start of Day 2 won't quickly bring the money bubble. Only 171 players will make the money and there will need to be 138 eliminations prior to all the players having a little something to celebrate. Every player that makes the money in this event will earn at least $5,207.

Dan O'Brien is hoping to become the third player this Series to earn five cashes and he's in great position to do so starting the day in second place. Dwyte Pilgrim and Gavin Smith are also both hold top-15 chip stacks.

The winner of this event will earn $749,610. Tomer Berda won the event in 2010 as he defeated a larger field of 1,942 players.

Event 37: $10,000 HORSE

The HORSE World Championship began on Tuesday with 240 players in action, one player short of the 2010 turnout of 241. The slow structure during the early levels resulted in only 67 eliminations on Day 1. Ron Ware, Eugene Katchalov, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Koral, Brett Richey, Barry Greenstein and Chris Tryba were all among the top 10 in chips at the conclusion of the first day of play.

Day 1 casualties included Phil Hellmuth, Erik Seidel, Dan Shak, Jennifer Harman, Robert Williamson, Maria Ho, Ylon Schwartz, Shaun Deeb and Andy Frankenberger.

This is one of the largest $10,000 buy-in events we've seen this summer and $609,130 will be awarded to the winner. Ten levels will be played on Wednesday.

The big picture

Two events begin on Wednesday, another $1,500 no-limit hold 'em event and a $5,000 split pot-limit Omaha/pot-limit hold 'em event. This week has provided a number of higher buy-in events that the pros have been looking for, but on the other side of the spectrum is the daily events that can also be found in the Amazon Room.

The glory at the WSOP may be found in the bracelets, but for those with smaller bankrolls, the daily "deepstack" events have been the perfect solution and attraction. The turnouts have been incredible in these events that offer buy-in levels of $135, $185 and $235. One of the biggest events of the WSOP took place during Sunday's 2 p.m. deepstack ($235 buy-in) which attracted a field of 1,110 players.

Besides the deepstacks, which are awarding top prizes in the five-figure range, the satellites have also been picking up. With no access to online poker, more players than ever are at the Rio are actively trying to get in the bigger events for cheap. It makes sense that the WSOP made a greater effort on this front this year and the changes have paid off with a double-digit growth in participation year-over-year.

Event #35: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha / Six Handed
Day 3 completed
Congratulations to Jason Mercier, Event #35 Champion ($619,575)

The World Series of Poker heard the voice of the players and included a six-handed PLO event on this year’s schedule. Event #35 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha/Six Handed was the first of its kind and appealed to an assorted mix of amateurs, professionals, and seasoned online players. When registration closed two days ago, 507 players had entered to create a prize pool of $2,382,900, with $619,575 of that reserved for first. It took three grueling days of intense play, but eventually it was Jason Mercier who defeated a stacked field to claim the prize and his second PLO WSOP gold bracelet.

Day 3 got off to a bang when the field of 15 that started the day was whittled down to just eight within the first two hours of play. The man making the most noise during that time seemed to be Mercier, who scored a double knockout to vault among the top stacks. In that hand, David "Devilfish" Ulliott raised to 25,000 from the button and Peter Jetten re-raised to 110,000 from the small blind. Mercier called from the big blind, while Ulliott called behind

The flop came down {2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and Jetten open-shoved all in, Mercier instantly went all in, and Devilfish called off his stack.

Mercier: {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Jetten: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Ulliott: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

Ulliott was ahead with a set of jacks, but Mercier had both straight and flush draws and Jetten's aces weren't looking too good. The turn came {q-Clubs} to give Mercier the straight, leaving Devilfish looking to pair the board; however, the river was the {4-Clubs} and both Jetten and Devilfish hit the rail. Of course the ever-vocal Devilfish didn’t leave before calling Mercier "the luckiest f***ing mother f***cker alive"
Early Eliminations

Place   Player   Prize
15   Shawn Bennani   $23,519
14   Peter Jetten   $23,519
13   David “Devilfish” Ulliott   $23,519
12   Daniel Fuhs   $30,024
11   Chris Moorman   $30,024
10   Jared Bleznick   $39,413
9   Robert Fellner   $53,210
8   David Callaghan   $39,413
7   Greg Brooks   $53,210

Brooks’ elimination meant the official final table had been reached. It was there that WSOP rookie Michael "Timex" McDonald got his short-stack all in against four-time bracelet winner David Chiu.

Chiu: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
McDonald: {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

Unfortunately the board ran out {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} and Timex was eliminated in sixth place for $73,965. The next elimination came some time later and in excruciating fashion. It began when Joe Ressler raised to 80,000 from under the gun and the action folded to Steven Merrifield in the small blind. He called as did Mercier in the big blind to see the flop fall {7-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Merrifield and Mercier checked to Ressler who bet 150,000, only to see Merrifield check-raise to 425,000. Mercier folded, Ressler snap-shoved and Merrifield insta-called.

Ressler: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Merrifield: {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

It was set-over-set as the dealer burned and turned the {4-Clubs}. Ressler was one card away from a double, but much to the shock of his supporters, the {10-Spades} spiked on the river. Merrifield had hit a one outer to send Ressler home in fifth place ($105,967).

The next to go was Chiu, who grew extremely short stacked and couldn’t outflop Mercier. The four-time bracelet winner hit the rail in fourth place, worth $156,628. Three-handed play began with the chips essentially spread equally between the players. Merrifield held a small lead, but short-handed play did not go his way. He was chipped down considerably and eventually eliminated at the hands of Hans Winzeler. That left Mercier (3.49 million) to do heads-up battle against Winzeler (4.125 million).

The heads-up match saw the chip lead change hands a couple of times, lasting almost two hours. In the end, Mercier hit a straight on the river to claim the title, his second in the PLO variation, with his previous victory coming back in the 2009 Event #5 $1,500 PLO after he cleared a field of 809 players to claim the $237,462 first-place prize. That means he has now won two PLO bracelets for a combined $857,037.
Final Table Results

Place   Player   Prize
1   Jason Mercier   $619,575
2   Hans Winzeler   $383,075
3   Steven Merrifield   $239,100
4   David Chiu   $156,628
5   Joe Ressler   $105,967
6   Michael McDonald   $73,965

Congratulations to Jason Mercier on becoming the Event #35 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha/Six Handed champion.
