WSOP Satellites Strong; Many More Chances to Win a Main Event Seat at Rio

Mega Satellites with Re-Entry Being Offered For the First Time
 

LAS VEGAS (June 27, 2011) – The 42nd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) Presented by Jack Links Beef Jerky at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino continues full steam ahead, with just 12 WSOP gold bracelet events remaining until the Main Event World Championship begins on Thursday, July 7.
 
Through 45 WSOP gold bracelet events, attendance and prize pool figures are still trending on pace to become all-time records.  Thus far, 53,018 entrants have participated, awarding prize money to the tune of $93,745,185.  If the pace continues, this will be the largest WSOP in its 42-year history.

The 2011 WSOP will be remembered as the most-participated poker festival ever, as live action, daily deepstack tournaments and satellite offerings have all seen record-setting attendance as well.

Satellites for the Main Event have been a staple of the world's biggest poker event for decades.  But this year, given record participation in bracelet events and the shuttering of online U.S. poker rooms, the WSOP will have the most comprehensive series of qualifying tournaments in its history.
 
From July 4th through July 10th, players seeking to participate in the world's richest sporting event will have non-stop opportunities to qualify on the cheap.

On July 4th, the WSOP will not begin any new tournaments, and instead dedicate more than 200 tables to satellite action.  Players can participate in a $330 Mega Satellite at 4pm or a $550 Mega Satellite at 8pm.  All Mega Satellites will allow re-entry for the first time.  Single table satellites will be spread as well throughout the day and evenings.

On July 6th, the only new tournaments on the schedule will be satellites, with hundreds of tables available for play.  $550 Mega Satellites will kick-off at 10am and 4pm with a $1060 Mega Satellite at 1pm and a $2080 Mega at 8pm.

The action does not slow down July 7-9th while some players begin their Main Event flights.  The same Mega Satellite schedule will be available as on July 6th, with $550 Megas at 10am and 4pm, $1060 at 1pm and $2080 at 8pm. Single table satellites will be available as well and on July 10th, there will be a special "last-chance" turbo satellite for $1060 at 8am.

Congratulations to Andre Akkari, Winner of Event #43: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em ($675,117)!

Some final tables are boring, bland, quiet and utterly unenjoyable for those on the rail, and from home, watching along. Thankfully for Andre Akkari, his many friends and the mammoth Brazilian-heavy rail that supported him over the previous few days, this tournament will go down as one of the most exciting of all time!

2,857 players took to the felt on Saturday to battle it out in one of the last $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em events of the Summer. Whether you were an online star, a seasoned veteran or someone playing your first tournament, nearly everyone stood at equal chance to finish atop in a few days time. The action flew hard and fast - as is expected in these events - as nearly 2,500 players found themselves on the rail unable to secure a day two berth.

As we plowed into the money early on day two, players would jostle and exchange chips freely as they looked to secure a place high on the chip leaderboard. Yueqi Zhu (280th), Thomas Keller (252nd), Erica Schoenberg (237th), Nick Binger (232nd), Tommy Vedes (228th), Doug Carli (223rd), Eric Baldwin (214th), Gavin Griffin (212th), Soi Nguyen (207th), Bernard Lee (161st), David Baker (149th), Kathy Liebert (148th), Joe Cada (144th), Maria Ho (125th), Dwyte Pilgrim (81st), Tim West (60th) and Age Spets (37th) all fell to the rail as thirty-four players survived to the expected final day.

Expecting to play through to a winner, no one was ever believing that it would occur, and although we were at a final table after just five hours of play, we all knew it would be a long night. Andre Akkari kick-started the action with a double elimination - one of which included a previous $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em winner in Ray Foley - as we lost Zachary Hall soon after. EPT Champion Nicolas Chouity was next out the door, before Scott Sitron followed to leave us with a final four. Three hours later majority day chip leader Jacob Naquin would fall ending the heated rail verbal war between his friends and those following current chip leader Nachman Berlin. Another ninety minutes later we would be heads up with Matthew Carmody quietly waving farewell.

With American Berlin up against Brazilian Akkari, it would be Akkari suffering at a slightly better than a two-to-one advantage, but what he lacked in chips, he made up with rail support as over fifty Brazilians (and others) filled the Thunder-Dome sporting football jerseys and waving Brazilian flags while bellowing out chants and cheers as they rallied behind their man.

After a little over an hour of heads-up play, the night would be paused Akkari sitting roughly at a three-to-one disadvantage. Play began at a very stagnant rate with it taking several hours before Akkari starting closing the gap between he and Berlin, and as we arrived at the first break, Akkari was trailing by only two-to-one. He slipped back out, but then managed to snag a huge double with his ace-eight against the king-queen of Berlin to bring it back to even before holding with pocket kings to sail out in front. From there it would take just a few more hands to end Berlin's tournament in second place and see the Brazilian awarded his first gold bracelet and $675,117 in prize money.

For Akkari, when he looks back at this tournament, he will have the memory of one of the strongest rails in WSOP history there supporting him. From the four hours of play today, to the time spent in the stands yesterday, his friends and supporters rallied behind him as he made a run at the gold. It was no more fitting that when he was awarded the bracelet he held it high above his head directly at the Brazilian crowd before he was given the announcer's microphone to lead a chant that everyone here in the Amazon room had no become so accustomed too.

Razzle Dazzle Dazzle, Rep Porter has won Event #44: $2,500 Razz for a cool $210,615 and his second World Series of Poker gold bracelet!

What was originally planned as a three-day event was extended to a fourth due to the ten-level stop rule at this year's WSOP. This left Stephen Su and Rep Porter, the only two remainders of a field of 363 from the first three days of play, to come back and duke it out heads up for a chance at the bracelet.

Su began the day with a nearly 600,000 chip advantage over Porter with around 2,700,000 in play. On the very first hand of the day however, that deficit was eliminated when Rep Porter made a nine-low and caught Su who double paired his under-cards to only make a queen-low. The hand gave Porter the lead, a lead he would never relinquish.

While Su was able to win lots of small pots, Porter found a way to win the majority of big ones to grind his opponent down to only 300,000 numerous times. Su had gotten all of his chips into the middle with that stack once but Porter laid his hand down to wait for a better spot.

That spot wouldn't exactly be ideal when Su was all in on third holding {3-}{2-} / {A-} against Porter's {6-}{9-} / {8-}. Su was looking even better when he hit a {4-} on fourth and Porter paired with an {8-}. Su caught a {10-} on fifth to give him a ten-low but Porter caught a {2-} to give him some outs as long as Su didn't make a better low from that point on. Sixth changed nothing for either player but on seventh, Porter hit a {4-} to give him a nine-low and the lead. Su wasn't able to catch a better low which gave Porter the knockout and the win.

Porter will walk away with $210,615 and a second gold bracelet to go along with the one he won in 2008 in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Six Handed Event.

Day 1 of Event 48 $1,500 No Limit Hold’em comes to a close after ten levels of play with an enormous starting field of 2,713. Only 390 of those survived the day and will return for Day 2. Alex Bolotin is your chipleader with 129,800, followed closely by Sebastian Winkler and Jonathan Little.

Moving to Day 2 includes Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Sorel Mizzi, Erik Cajelais, David Singer, Chino Rheem, JJ Liu, Josh Tieman, Matt Stout, Soi Nguyen, Leo Wolpert, Matt Stout, Lauren Kling and Gary Gates.

The large starting field claimed a slew of notable players as victims that didn’t survive the day, including; Tom Dwan, Carlos Mortensen, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Moneymaker, David Bakes Baker, Adam Junglen, Rob Mizrachi, Justin Bonomo, Neil Channing, Jean-Robert Bellande, Isaac Haxton and Liv Boeree.

Day 1 was just one of three tournaments that Dwan played today. He played the opening levels before his Day 2 restart in the $2,500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud HiLo event. He came back to play his stack again during one the breaks in the other tournament. After he busted from the HiLo mix he focused on Day 1 in this event for a little while. He eventually busted and then jumped over to the $2,500 Deuce to Seven Triple Draw event.

Sowers, Grospellier, & Moorman Lead the Pack w/ 22 Players Headed to Day 3!

Twelve hours ago, 162 players returned for Day 2 of Event No. 46, the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed event in an attempt to crack the top 48 and earn themselves a payday. By the end of the night, what started as a 474-player field had been reduced to just 22 players. Leading the way is none other than Mike Sowers, who bagged up 1,468,000 in chips.

Close on his heels are a number of recognizable pros in Chris Moorman (1,458,000), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (1,400,000), David Benefield (622,000), Lee Markholt (368,000), and Ben Lamb (501,000).

With a stacked field advancing to Day 3, it is easy to overlook those who fell in their wake. Ali Eslami, Huck Seed, Andy Frankenberger, Jonathan Duhamel, David “Bakes” Baker, Alan Sternberg, James Akenhead, Dwyte Pilgrim, McLean Karr, and David “Devilfish” Ulliott were all Day 2 eliminations; in fact, they were all among the 114 players who fell short of the money.

While many pros failed to gain momentum on Day 2, others managed to make their way past the money bubble. Some of the players who cashed were Tom Marchese (47th- $19,159), Davidi Kitai (45th- $19,159), Daniel Alaei (43rd- $19,159), Isaac Baron (39th- $21,787), Dmitry Gromov (34th- $24,773), Jason Koon (29th- $29,228), Phil “Unabomber” Laak (28th- $29,228), and Joe Cada (26th- $29,228).

Headed into Day 3, there are two major storylines to keep an eye on. First and foremost, Lamb is fresh off a victory in Event #42 $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship where he captured his first WSOP gold bracelet and the accompanying $814,436 first-place prize. Combine that with his second-place finish in Event #31 Pot-Limit Omaha, for which he earned $259,918, and he currently current sits atop the WSOP Player-of-the-Year Race. Not including this event, Lamb has 486.25 points, which is more than 60 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Like Lamb, Grospellier is seeking his second bracelet of the summer after emerging victorious in Event #21 Seven Card Stud Championship to win the $331,639 prize. Grospellier currently sits in 18th on the POY Leaderboard with 299.25 points, a total he is guaranteed to add to no matter where he finishes in this event. Capturing two bracelets in the same year is rare, let alone in two Championship Events. Both Lamb and Grospellier have the opportunity to accomplish that here in Event #46. If either is able to do so, it’ll no doubt go a long way in helping them compete for the coveted POY title.

Event #45: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Kenneth Griffin - Winner of Event #45: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em! ($455,356)

Kenneth Griffin started today 2nd in chips out of the 21 players remaining. He fought hard, played aggressively, and battled his way to his first WSOP bracelet. Griffin had to battle a field of players including the likes of Antonio Esfandiari, David Baker, Andrew Teng, and our chipleader to start the day Jonathan Driscoll.

In the first hour of play today a whopping seven players were eliminated narrowing the field down to 14. Griffin helped with those eliminations a bit by knocking out Nicolo Calia in 16th place. Esfandiari had trouble gaining momentum at beginning of the day with his stack dipping to as low as 200,000 at one point. David Baker came into the day short stacked and although he fought hard, he was eventually eliminated in 13th place.

When we reached the final table, Esfandiari had rebounded to take the chip lead while Griffin wasn't far behind him. The first player eliminated from the final table was Jeremiah Siegmund and he was followed out the door by Aaron Massey.

Esfandiari started the final table with the chip lead along with being the far-and-away most experienced player at the table. Unfortunately, he lost a few huge pots early during final table play which included running into aces when he held ace-eight on an ace high board, and running king-ten into another players ace-king and he was knocked out in seventh place.

Jonathan Lane, who was the chip leader at the start of day 2, was next to go in sixth place and he was followed by Andrew Teng in fifth place who racked up his 4th cash in the 2011 WSOP and his 12th overall WSOP cash.

Eric Baudry stayed quiet for most of the day, not getting involved in many big hands and eventually was eliminated in fourth place. Our third place finisher was Philip Hammerling who had never cashed in a WSOP event before today. He flopped trip sevens from his blind in an unraised pot and was outdrawn by Griffin's flush draw to be eliminated.

When we reached heads up play it was obvious to all present that Griffin's aggression and gutsy plays were getting under the skin of Jean Luc Marais who couldn't seem to gain any ground. On the final hand of the night, Griffin already had a large chip advantage to his opponent and found himself in a dream situation.

Marais declared he was all in preflop and Griffin looked down at his cards... pocket aces. He excitedly called and found that he would only have to beat Marais' king-six offsuit to take the bracelet. The board ran out blanks and Griffin's rail went crazy with excitement, hoisting the champion onto their shoulders and singing his praise.

Griffin is no stranger to battle as he served in the Marines for more than 10 years including tours in Iraq and Afganistan. He now works as a consultant for the Marines and just got back from an eight-month trip to Afganistan a week ago. His brother and many of his friends were present to witness his victory and it was clear from the looks on all their faces that this would be a moment none of them will ever forget.

Congratulations to Ken Griffin, winner of Event #45: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em, he takes home $455,356 and his first ever WSOP gold bracelet for his achievement!
