Congratulations to Leonard Martin, winner of Event #49: $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball (Limit) and $189,919 in prize money. Not only that, Martin is walking away with a brand new World Series of Poker gold bracelet around his wrist.

Martin held four WSOP cashes on his record prior to this one, including a second-place finish in the $1,000 Limit Deuce to Seven Triple Draw event in 2007. He was able to top that performance here and go on to take victory over Justin Bonomo.

When the day began, all eyes were on Jason Mercier as he went for number two of this year's Series. Mercier went on to finish in sixth place as he couldn't get much going at the final table. From there, Martin quietly maneuvered his way to the final three before he began to make some noise.

When play got down to just two, Marin was down two-to-one in chips. He battled back to take the lead, but it took a lot more to win the event. Martin and Bonomo battled back and forth with the lead exchanging hands several times. Finally, Martin put a hurting on Bonomo and left him short. The match was over shortly after that.

'Doc' Sands Puts on a Clinic as Unofficial Final Table is Reached

When Day 2 of Event #51: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better began, there were 134 players remaining from a starting field of 847. With only 90 players getting paid, we never envisioned making the unofficial final table by days’ end. However with the insane rate of players busting throughout the day, the unofficial final table was reached with over a half an hour left in the day. Leading the final table is David ‘Doc’ Sands who started the day in third place with 99,800 but has amassed a whopping 1,130,000 in chips, good for just over a quarter of the total chips in play.

Given all of the eliminations throughout the day, one would think that the hand of the day would certainly be one involving a bustout, especially considering Sands knocked out five of the last eight players that lost. However the key pot for chip leader Sands was a massive marathon of a hand that took around 15 minutes and didn’t even include a showdown. With the board reading {J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{K-Spades} and already around 400,000 in the pot between the two chip leaders, Sands moved all in for 310,000. With about 375,000 behind, Wice tanked and eventually folded {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for Broadway while Sands mucked his hand and took down the monster pot. Sands would later go on to eliminate Wice in 11th place on the unofficial final table bubble.

Other notable Eliminations that made the money included PokerStars Team Pro Alexandre Gomes (87th), Antony Lellouche (82nd), Mike Beasley (72nd), Dario Alioto (64th), Erik Seidel (58th), Alexander Kostritsyn (53rd), Day 1 chip leader William Speir (51st), Ben Yu (49th), Kathy Liebert (46th), Barry Shulman (19th) and Fabrizio Gonzalez (16th).

The players will come back tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. PST and hopefully play down to a winner that will get $268,235 and the coveted WSOP gold bracelet.

Event #53: $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship

Day 1 in the Books; Ruby Du Outshines the Field!


There is no question that the numbers for the World Series of Poker side events has gone from strength to strength, but the proof was in the pudding today after the 2011 WSOP $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Ladies Championship brought in a solid 1,055 players, including names like Vanessa Selbst, Liv Boeree, Melanie Weisner, Leo Margetts, Jennifer Tilly, Lauren Kling and Maria Ho.

The French launched a massive assault on this title, with defending champion Vanessa Hellebuyck leading the charge along with Almira “ChessBaby” Skripchenko and Celine Bastian.

The poker media were also out in force today, featuring PokerNews’ own Lynn Gilmartin, Kristy Arnett and Elissa Harwood, as well as Gloria Balding, Rebecca McAdam, Kara Scott, Jess Welman, Melissa Castello and Kirsty Chick.

Many of the “old school” were also in attendance, including Linda Johnson, Barbara Enright, Cyndy Violette and Susie Issacs. And although none of these leading ladies will be back tomorrow for Day 2, it doesn’t matter – the spirit in which the game was played was outstanding and all should be commended for their sportsmanship and goodwill.

Still, we have ourselves 137 players coming back tomorrow and all eyes will be on Ruby Du, who tops our chip counts with 67,800 in chips. Following closely behind is Carol Tomlinson with 63,800, while Crystal Sloan (58,000), Pamela Roberts (57,200) and Xiu Deng (54,900).

Other names to be returning for Day 2 include Shola Akindele (52,200), Yu Kurita (51,000), Gretchen "The Dragon Lady" Bremmer (43,400), Melanie Banfield (42,000), Karina Jett (30,600), Esther Bonding (20,400), Michelle "Sassy" Richey (20,300) and Alexandra Petitjean (17,500).

Antonin Teisseire Captures the Bracelet in Event #50! ($825,604)

It's all over but the shouting, "Allez!"

Antonin Teisseire has just scored another bracelet for France, their third of this 2011 Series. Teisseire will join Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Fabrice Soulier, and several dozen excitable fans in bringing some American hardware back home to their country in a couple weeks.

Teisseire is no stranger to tournament cashes, but he's not tasted such lofty success like this before. This is his largest tournament cash by a few hundred thousand, his first gold bracelet, and from the looks of it, one of the happiest moments in the life of this 65-year-old pro.

We'll confess we were nearly trampled by Teisseire in the celebratory moments following his win. And now, as he and his friends gather on the stage for a few photos, the chaos of the moment has subsided a bit, and there are long-lasting grins all the way around. As the last flashbulbs pop, they break into song, chanting, "La-lala-la-laaaa!", jumping up and down in excitement.

Congratulations to David Singontiko, Event #51 Champion! ($268,235)


We're witnessing quite a scene here. David Singontiko of California has just won his first WSOP bracelet -- in the first event he's ever entered! -- besting a field of 946 to win Event No. 51, the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better event. His group of joyous supporters have surrounded him, and it looks like the celebrating will be continuing for some time this evening.

It was a hard-fought ten-handed final table that saw several big chips swings, some clever play, and more than a few moments of good fortune along the way. During the very first orbit of play, David "Doc" Sands lost his huge chip lead and more than two-thirds of his stack after losing a huge hand versus Jeffery Gibralter. Sands would hang on a while longer before exiting in 10th and missing the official final table.

While Gibralter maintained his newly-gained chip lead, the short stacks fought for a while before soon falling one by one, with John Reiss (ninth), Robert Campbell (eighth), and Cliff Kettinger (seventh) going out in short order. The Brazilian Marco Oliveira -- with recent bracelet winner Andre Akkari on the rail cheering him on -- went out next in sixth, followed soon by Thomas Scarber in fifth.

Meanwhile, Singontiko was accumulating chips, and after knocking Igor Sharaskin in fourth in a particularly unlucky hand for the Russian, held a large chip lead when three-handed play began.

It looked like Michael Yee was destined to go out in third, stuck on a short stack for much of the time the trio played. But a huge pot developed between Singontiko and Gibralter that saw the latter hit the rail in third, and it would only take a couple more hands for Singontiko to take the last of Yee's short stack.

The story we're hearing is that Singontiko worked several months for his father's mortgage company at $10/hour to save up for this one event, his first ever at the Series. Soon after winning, Singontiko gave his father a call to tell him the good news -- in three days he'd earned a cool $268,235 with that $1,500 he saved up working for his dad! Not to mention a nice piece of jewelry to commemorate his effort.

Event #52: $2,500 Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No-Limit)

Congratulations to Matt Matros, Winner of Event #52: $2,500 Mixed Hold'em ($303,501)!

Matt Matros was crowned winner of the $2,500 Mixed Hold'em event, earning his second career bracelet. The Limit Hold'em specialist won the $1,500 Limit event last year. He has come close to another final table twice already this year, finishing 12th in the $2,500 Limit Six Max event and 11th in the $1,500 Limit event that he'd won in 2010. This time he went all the way and now has the double gold to prove it.

This was one of the few events that reached a final table by the end of Day 2, so it was only the final nine who sat down at the felt this afternoon. Adam Sanders was the first to make his exit in ninth place, followed by Aalok Arora in eighth. Dutch pro Noah "Exclusive" Boeken then fell in seventh place. After three quick eliminations, the final table stalled at six. After some back-and-forth, Russian Nikolay Losev was eliminated in sixth place.

Matros was extremely short at the dinner break. But after dinner it was Brian Smith who exited first, in fifth place. Matros doubled and doubled again. Brandon Meyers started the day with a big chip lead, but with the limit rounds of each hour playing so big, every player experienced wide swings. Meyers, who plays as "norajean" online, had the biggest lead of the tournament after one particularly dominant round of four-handed no limit. During the next round of limit, however, he got run over by limit experts Matros and Matt "Hoss_TBF" Hawrilenko. He was the short stack when they made it back to no limit and got his chips in with queens against the kings of Matros to finish in fourth place.

And then there were three: bracelet-winning limit hold'em experts and good friends Matt and Matt, and Jonathan Lane, a relatively unknown player who is having a fantastic series. Matros knocked out his good friend, Hawrilenko, in third place, making a flush to best Hawrilenko's two pair in limit hold'em. That gave Matros a 3:1 chip lead to start heads up. Lane fought valiantly, even taking the lead at one point, but in the end, it was Matros who won the day. Lane earned $187,844 in his fifth cash of the Series a week after finishing sixth at the final table of a $1,000 No Limit event. Matros was all smiles with his $303,501 and his second career bracelet.

Event #54: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Day 1a Concludes, Volpe Leading the Way

Day 1a of Event #54: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em is officially in the books! We started the day with 1,932 players and play ceased at the end of level nine with 275 players remaining. Our chipleader is Paul Volpe who finished the day with a massive stack of 124,500. We didn't see any other stacks over the 100,000 mark at the end of play.

Notable names that will continue on to Day 2 include Pierre Neuville, Fatima Moreira De Melo, Randy Lew, Brandon Cantu, Matt Stout, Paul "X22" Magriel and Devin Porter.

A number of recognizable faces took to the felt today but weren't able to gain enough momentum and were eliminated from the tournament including Antonio Esfandiari, Tony Dunst, Dan Heimiller, Andy Black, Men Nguyen, and Hoyt Corkins.

Tomorrow Day 1b will begin and they will play nine levels (just as the players did today), then the remaining players from both days will join together on Monday for Day 2.
