I set one up to host a few photos to share. I think it's a linked to one google/gmail account.

Yes. my phone offers to upload pictures to Picasa if I open an account (Or perhaps link it to my existing google account, I'm not sure which).

If I go ahead, will my contact details or information (i.e. email addy) be accessible to all and sundry?

If you click on a "featured photo" in Picasa, all you see is the person's picasa nickname . You can optionally fill in an "about me" section as well.

The website address includes your gmail email address so use a disposable one if you want to avoid future spam. Can't see any other visible personal data if I look at my online album.

So do I need to create a new gmail address before I sign up to picasa?

I have used picasa for years without any trouble Tom. I just use my normal email addy. You can decide which if any of your pictures become public or kept in private folders and there is some ok'ish editing software too.
