Kings throughout history or artists. As a kid mine were trees. Go Oak!... Probs scientists or countries. Baggsy South Sudan.
do they have all the oil or is it north sudan. and which one is where all the terrorists come from

South sudan has all the oil, but the only route out is through the north!  WP GG

this has reminded me of my school house system!

We had 3 house names, Resolution, Endurance, Endeavor.

I was House Capt of Resolution, and it was 1 boy and 1 girl as House Capts.  the most popular Girl was selected...pretty, clever, good at sports, etc, you know the type.

It was announced at assembly, and i was asked afterwards by one of her mates would i go out with her!

Me, out with the prettiest girl in the School!....break-time comes around, and we met by the wall where Killer Tennis was played....

We kiss, I'm in heaven, and she breaks away, and promptly states,.." Bet won, your chucked"

School could be so cruel!

Definitely use the scientists and inventors idea imo.

Planet and stars would be my second choice.

Why do you need so many names?

the idea is that they have a recp, yr 1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5, 6 in each house.  So each house has 7 members, 210 pupils.

meh knock this idea on the head - 4 houses, school-wide.  ours were named after saints which i guess is pretty standard at a left-footers school

Our houses were named after significant historic people that were an influence locally:

Byron
Chesterfield
Trent

etc...

This - the Houses should go vertically, that way you get recp and yr 1's up to years 5 and 6 being integrated into a community because they're all in the same House

Greek or Roman Gods would be my preference for House names - plenty of scope for mythological and historical investigations from that

This. Ours at school were named after reasonably famous old pupils. Unfortunately this meant that one house was called "Ball's" after Albert Ball, famous WWI pilot and VC winner. Didn't stop 8-11 year old kids sniggering, obv. But gave the history teachers excuses to set the same research projects every year Smiley. Senior and Junior schools had different houses. I was in Trease's (Geoffrey Trease, Author), then White's (can't remember). Each house also had an associated colour that was worn on certain bits of uniform. Ours was red. So I was in White's house, with the colour red.

30 houses? Madness, frankly.

Beegees and Oasis went to the same school as i did as a kid (Oswald Rd, Chorlton) as our Headteacher reminded us every single morning. Would have been quality being named after them. Barry Gibb house!

Similar with mine - six houses - all saints/cardinals/priests.

Sci-Fi and cartoon characters,

I would like to have been in Princess Leia, Catwoman or, at a push, Spidey House.

How about famous universities?

Cambridge, Oxford etc. (I used etc. because I can't think of any others)

Keeps it academic.

Maybe they could put all the clever and healthy kids in the Cambridge house and all the thickos and fatties in Lincoln?

This would help them to know their place and realise where they might end up if they don't buck up their ideas.

would not work around here coz Cambridge house is where social services send all the under 16's that get kicked out of home.

67 (59) CAMBRIDGE HOUSE - SINGLE STATUS - The Director of Social and Housing Services submitted a report seeking approval to re-align the Cambridge House staffing establishment to equate to the single status position evident within the other children’s homes.
