This could explain many people's predjudices!

Bit confused now. I know these are Romany Gyspies - surely these are just distantly related to the travellers we've had in this country for hundreds of years?

Traveller or settled person..if someone moved into my house like that I'd have 'em dragged out n smash their knees with hammers. Failing that I'd firebomb them out. SCUM.

That's sort of my point, or part of it. Many people would just see the word 'Gypsy', others would just expect this as 'that's the sort of thing Gypsies do' and from the Romanian point of view, that's why the settled population treats them as they do in Romania. Also might explain why the French acted as they did.

I've heard of this squatting stuff, and it really pisses me off. Apparently the blacks, jews, homosexuals and midgets are all at it as well.

Yeah there is something a bit weird going on here.  The women was only away for the weekend and then came back, the house was trashed and they had already talked to the neighbours, told them she was dead and the house was rented out by her son.  Didn't they see her leave on the Friday?  Didn't they think it was a bit weird to get the house rented so soon?  Also the idea of Gypsies squatting somewhere doesn't seem right somehow to me.

If I didn't know that journalists never make stories up or do anything bad I would be inclined to believe this was almost a too perfect story for the Mail......nice middle class blonde lady (who works to keep foreign filth out of our country) whose hobbies include going to the Proms and visiting her elderly parents comes home to find it has been taken over by a marauding group of immigrants and not only this they were Gypsies who trashed her house (which they then intended to live in??!!!???) and, horror of horrors, drank her wine.  Of course I know it must be true because if the Mail had made it up to suit their agenda then the lady would have also found a mysterious plasma TV, brand new Nike trainers and facemask in the bedroom that their young son had taken over.

Also LOL at the comment below the article from Linda in Sussex "SOMETHING ELSE THAT NEEDS ADDRESSING MR.CAMERON" - yep Linda Gypsies taking over peoples houses is a big problem in this country and requires urgent legislation.

Yes, I did read it, you quoted the line I was talking about.

I, myself, am English, and I wouldn't have a clue if the family next door are travellers, Gypsies or swingers for that matter.

OK, so let's pretend that the story is true, that a Romanian Gypsy family has broken into someone's home, taken it over, stolen whatever they wanted and trashed the rest AND that they are part of a Romanian Gypsy gang that do this as a matter of course.

Nobody in the thread has excused the act itself.  We are just questioning whether the fact that they are Gypsies is relevant.  Most squatters in this country are white and British but the Mail doesn't, as far as I know, write stories about that and if they did it wouldn't refer to their race.  Have you ever seen the headline "women comes home to find family of white celts in her living room"?

It also seems odd that in the space of an evening out they've already stripped the carpets (seemingly to chuck them in the garden - were they really that bad or did the owner not like them and fancied her insurer buying a new one), sorted a fake lease, decided to ditch their own clothes because hers are nicer (and just happen to fit) and are inviting random people in to drink her wine.
