Can anyone advise a numpty pair if this car is worth it or steer clear with the following info.

Renault Megane Hatch Back, 2005, 1.9 Diesel, 37k on the clock. Had slight bump to rear pass side which has been repaired but has now got a Cat C ? on it. 6 months Tax. 11 Months test.  Asking price 2.4k ono.

Just a little help as we have not got a clue but need new car.

Category C means it has had significant damage and was deemed not a viable repair. That doesn't mean it's not worth considering but be careful.

The mileage is very low for the year, which probably means it has been standing somewhere waiting for repair for a considerable time, if this was outdoors there could be a lot of rust lurking behind that new paint job. Have a look at the log book, See how long ago it was transferred out of the previous owner's name (If you get a chance, surreptitiously  make a note and give them a ring, you'll find out far more than the salesman will tell you).

I would expect to pick something similar (Without the damage) up at auction for ~ 3.5k

xx

Parkers has the dealer price for this car in very good condition as £3,200 and private poor condition as about £2,100.

Category C - Repairable. Significant damage. Cost of the repair is more than book value of vehicle at dealer rates.

If the cost of the repairs was more than the book value it raises the question how could it be properly repaired and then sold for less than the book value?

Personally I would find another car, the price doesn't sound a bargain to me and with the repairs and Cat C status you might have problems selling it in the future.

Some insurance companies will require an engineers report before they will insure it,and may still charge a premium and reduce the payout in the event of another claim.

ty Tom, it's a private sale. The guy who is selling bought it from the insurance company as he is a body repairer and has done the work him self. You can not see any damage but then we might not be looking in the correct place.

Would need to be cheaper for me. Same year but 70k miles £2495 on autotrader for a straight one (trade local), cat c will bump the premiums up too. No carrot here.

You really need to know your onions with this sort of thing Maureen.

Pay a bit more and get a straight one imo.

Great advice from Tom. Quality of repair, insurance premiums, and re-sale value are all things to consider when assessing the value of a bargain. Plenty of good straight cars on the market for £2.4k imo.

Wp for making further enquiries about a vehicle you're interested in buying thou. Sensible thing to do.

is it a friend selling the car or just a private sale. would hate to see you get a duffer but if its a friend i'm sure they would not have you over and if you think its a bargain then its maybe a bargain.
