My laptop seems to slow down when I am using firefox. I've opened the Task Manager and it seems that Firefox is using 175,000k with two tabs, and still using over 153,000k with just one.

This seems a lot, the desktop pc shows firefox at around 50,000k in similar usage

it's especially troublesome when I have HEM and a poker client open and has led to the system slowing down so much that I get timed off hands

any one got any hints or clues?

Disable any add-ons and try again.

Is it an up to date version?

And as Andrew says it could be an add on.

Firefox does have memory leaks, especially if you are using lots of add-ons and have lots of tabs open.  I have about 20 tabs open now, and have about 30 add-ons.

Current memory usage for firefox: 1,010,240K!

Uninstall and use Google Chrome.

But don't save any passwords you use on the web as they'll be stored as plain text on your computer, and so anyone with access to your machine (physically or via a trojan) can access them without you knowing.

Bragging?

I have disabled both my add-ons and have two tabs open and stil using 139,000k

Not keen on Chrome and the firefox interface no longer seems to have an easy way to clear the cache or history which I suspect may help.

It was all so much simpler before they improved it

Switch off Java.
Sometimes Firefox crashes but leaves one copy 'running' while you've restarted a new session.
It's a pain in the butt, I'd move to Chrome or even Opera but I cba finding all my stored passwords again.

But never going back to IE. It's over, Bill

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me i didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

No, it's a pain.  I use it for work and unfortunately need those plug-ins and 'abuse' it a fair bit.

Is that slowing your PC down?

You can definitely clear the cache and history.  You can also change the interface 'back' to how it used to be with the tabs not on top, and with the menu bar visible, etc.

Uninstall and use Google Chrome.

Do this under no circumstances.

This isn't a perfect solution, but it certainly helps.

Installing Chrome messed with my firefox install - it wouldn't run properly with it installed, uninstalled it and FF worked again. I haven't tried chrome since.
