I've had a kindle for a year, because I nicked it off my sister that never used it. I love it, but now she wants it back.

So I am gonna buy one. I have, however, noticed that some of the android tablets are retailing for about £60, so I figured it made more sense to get one of those so I can surf the net too.

I assume Android have kindle apps, does anyone have any experience of these cheaper tablets? Are they any good for what I want?

All I would use it for is books, emails, & web surfing (slim chance of videos too) so I am not looking for anything spectacular.

Depends how much you read really - my Mum prefers using the kindle app on her iPad - so she can read in bed without needing the light on  . Personally I far prefer the e-ink screen on the kindle as I read a lot & it's easier on the eyes. Also kindle batteries last a lot longer.

Ah you bring up a good point actually, I presume a tablets battery life is similar to an iPad or phone?

Think that might swing me back towards a kindle.

I use the Kindle app on an ASUS eee Pad Transformer and it's fine, but will still probably get one of the new Kindles.

The option of a backlit screen will be useful at times.  The main drawback I've found is that you can't upload your own documents onto the apps - you need a Kindle (more specifically it's serial number) to do this.  I have a couple of PDFs that I'd really like to get onto the Kindle app but haven't managed it as yet.

Have you tried Calibre Sheriff? It's what I use for downloaded books to get them into the kindle - would imagine you could use it with the app - (or just put them straight into the folder with the kindle books?)

if you're mainly wanting to read books, a kindle is a nobrainer.

if you're reading books 50% of time of less, go with a tablet, but by god get a good one.

The kindle is superb..if you read a lot I would definitely go with that.

On the plus side the Android tablet has this superb automatic bathroom scales app.

no UK release date because we don't have the infrastructure that amazon needs to make it awesome. expect it (or a derivative) in 2 years or so. no time soon. US got original kindle 1.5 yrs before uk and that required basically 0 infrastructure in comparison.

for that reason (lack of infrastructure) I don't think it would work, but I couldn't confirm that for sure.

What infrastructure does it need?  not having a go just genuinely interested and don't know.

Amazon Cloud (which encompasses a few things) and whispernet (if you also want 3g capabilities)

see here for more info.

warning: it's quite long and full of annoying tools ITT Wink
