Shocking news, seems he was suffering from depression, the sad thing is people can hide this and don't seek the help needed because of the stigma.

RIP

Was he having relationsip problems/ depression? Very sad news

This was my first thoughts too, on paper he had everything - great career on the pitch, potentially great one on the horizon in the dugout, healthy, rich, family etc

Seems like a real waste, RIP

Very sad news. RIP.

Only yesterday Stan Collymore tweeted about his depression and how it affects him, and how he deals with it (or not). Collymore is often seen as 'troubled' and to hear about his depression doesn't really come as a great shock - but Speed would have been one of the last ex-footballers who I'd have thought suffered from depression. Seemed to have it all, and it highlights that depression can affect anyone regardless of money, success, family, etc.

Wow - rip.

He was a great ambassador and an excellent player who I admired a lot.

This one is so shocking there's got to be a lot more to it than depression and I'm sure the press won't leave it alone until they find out.

Thoughts with his wife and kids.

Rip.

Consensus seems to be that he was on good form in the last few days. Maybe he was good at hiding his real feelings, or maybe he'd found some relief in the knowledge that he'd found a way out.

Sure is easy for blokes, especially have-it-alls flying high in football, to talk about their real feelings.

""A minute's silence before kick-off was broken with the crowd bursting into applause after a few seconds and singing "One Gary Speed, there's only one Gary Speed." """
