I have no desire to understand any rumours - if there is any back story its the last thing is family and children need. However, if there was a story that the tabloids were planning to run, it is just sickening. I was listening to Charlotte Church on Five Live today in the Leveson enquiry - just horrendous excuses for human beings, and im actually ashamed I bought tabloids for years. Only way it'll change is if people stop buying that shit, its a disgarce.

I think it's unfair to ask people not to speculate about this shocking news. Like many people I've followed Gary Speed's career since his debut for Leeds and always rated him as a player wherever he played. You kinda feel like you know Gary Speed because he was such a nice dependable fella and I do feel like I've grown up with him. After a magnificient career and MBE he was courting rave reviews as the national manager of his beloved Wales and everyone was happy for Gary Speed. Football fans and personal friends alike are stunned because they know he was incred excited about the future and had so much to live for today. So yeah why? He appeared completely normal to everybody on the day he died so I think he was prob hit with some news later in the day. The Leveson inquiry is currently in progress and it's purpose is to examine the culture, practices and ethics of the media. Loads of celebs have been lining up to give evidence that the media goes too far and ruins lives. If the press contacted Speed and pressured him to get his version before they went to print I want to know about that, and I want the inquiry to know about that. I couldn't give one fig about his sexuality and so I don't understand what should be hushed up and not speculated upon. All this looking back on his career in the papers and not asking why is unsettling me because it's like he was 79 yrs old or something. No, he was a young guy in his prime and excited about the future, so the only question is why?

Not sure who's misunderstood the meaning of speculate but I agree it's fine to ask why. I don't think it is helpful to make up/repeat rumours with no knowledge of how accurate they are and I think it's pretty fair to ask people not to do it while friends and families are grieving.

Maybe we could reflect on his passing, and his great life, then ask why. We live in a sensationalist, story/shock driven culture, that can obscure the part that really matters imo.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me i didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

Think were all violently agreeing - if the press have something again to answer for, they need to be held accountable. There was one part of the inquiry today that stuck with me linked to suicide - great NOW headline "Church three in a bed coke fuelled orgies" - actually about her mums partner, not her where her mum attempted suicide and had her elderly Gran had to put up with comments in church on a Sunday. Just vile.

Great article by Henry Winter about how special football fans are in times like these

Universally respected by all football fans regardless of what team they follow is testament to how he went about his football.

Very much this.
For whatever reason, there are a small number of players who are able to transcend the usual football rivalries in terms of how people react to them.
Gary Speed was clearly one of them. It's just tragic that we've had these horrific circumstances for it to be seen.
RIP Gary.

I've removed the last few posts from this thread. If people want to debate the why's and how's on this then do it on a different thread and leave this one for people to pay their respects, as had been intended by the OP.

I had to drive past Elland Road this morning and saw the tributes around the statue for the first time.
It's a spectacular sight, and a fitting tribute.
